  • Ability to make practical system-level tradeoffs across performance, schedule, cost, reliability, testability, and mission risk is required.
  • Ability to lead through influence in a cross-functional environment spanning avionics, guidance, navigation, and control, power, propulsion, mechanical, systems, and mission operations is required.
Responsibilities
  • Own the flight software architecture from early design through development, integration, test, qualification, and flight operations.
  • Lead development of real-time embedded flight software, including board support packages, bootloaders, device drivers, real-time operating system configuration, scheduling, and inter-task communication.
  • Build command and telemetry handling, onboard data storage and downlink management, time management, and onboard sequencing and autonomy.
  • Architect fault detection, isolation, and recovery, safe modes, watchdogs, redundancy management, and fault tolerance for flight-grade autonomous systems.
  • Integrate guidance, navigation, and control, power, propulsion, and payload algorithms and control loops into flight software with deterministic timing and well-defined interfaces.
  • Define software interfaces and command/telemetry protocols across vehicle buses, including SpaceWire, CAN, Ethernet, MIL-STD-1553, RS-422/485, SPI, I2C, and UART, and ground protocols such as CCSDS.
  • Select or build the flight software framework, such as NASA cFS, F Prime, or an in-house framework, and establish its toolchain, build system, and configuration management.
  • Build software test infrastructure for unit and integration testing, software-in-the-loop simulation, hardware-in-the-loop and processor-in-the-loop rigs, flatsat-based verification, and continuous integration.
  • Design on-orbit flight software update mechanisms, secure boot, and protections against memory corruption and single-event effects, including error detection and correction, memory scrubbing, and memory protection.
  • Partner with avionics on processor and FPGA/SoC selection, board bring-up, and debugging, and drive root-cause resolution across hardware and software during bench work and integrated test campaigns.
  • Provide technical leadership across flight software, embedded, ground software, and software test efforts.
  • Help hire, manage, mentor, and develop flight software and embedded engineers as the team grows.
  • Establish software engineering processes, including coding standards, code and design review, static analysis, requirements traceability, and verification discipline appropriate for flight-grade software.
  • Help define software requirements, interfaces, timing and resource budgets for CPU, memory, and bandwidth, verification plans, and vehicle fault-handling approaches.
  • Work with avionics, guidance, navigation, and control, power, propulsion, mechanical, systems, ground software, and mission operations to close interfaces, deliver command and telemetry databases and operational tooling, and field an integrated flight system.
  • Work with the founders and early engineering team to shape the technical roadmap, engineering culture, hiring plan, and long-term flight software strategy.
  • Represent the flight software function in cross-disciplinary design reviews, customer conversations, investor diligence, vendor discussions, and mission planning as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • Flight heritage, including flight software the candidate helped develop that has flown and operated on orbit.
  • Experience leading flight software, embedded, ground software, or software test teams.
  • Experience managing engineers in a startup, aerospace company, defense contractor, launch company, robotics company, or other high-reliability technical environment.
  • Experience with flight software frameworks such as NASA cFS, F Prime, or comparable in-house frameworks.
  • Experience implementing guidance, navigation, and control, attitude control, or autonomy software on embedded targets.
  • Experience handling radiation effects in software, including single-event-effect mitigation, error detection and correction, memory scrubbing, and memory protection.
  • Experience with spacecraft communications and protocols, including CCSDS, SpaceWire, MIL-STD-1553, or CAN.
  • Experience with bootloaders, secure boot, and on-orbit or over-the-air flight software update mechanisms.
  • Experience with ground software, telemetry and command systems, or mission operations tooling.
  • Experience with FPGAs or SoCs such as Xilinx/AMD Zynq, hardware description language development in VHDL/Verilog, or hardware/software co-design.
  • Experience running embedded Linux, such as Yocto or PetaLinux, alongside a real-time operating system or bare-metal software.

About the company

Pillar Space offers reusable satellites in orbit that act as rentable infrastructure for other companies’ payloads. A customer launches a payload in a standard adapter, and Pillar Space’s satellite autonomously docks with it in low Earth orbit to supply power, data, thermal management, mobility, and mission operations for the lease, with an optional capsule return to Earth. It differentiates itself by providing on-orbit service via autonomous docking instead of building the customer’s own spacecraft, supported by a team with experience from Northrop Grumman, SpaceX, and Impulse Space and backers including South Park Commons. The goal is to provide persistent, ready-to-use orbital infrastructure that lowers the cost and complexity of conducting microgravity experiments and manufacturing in space, aiming for a first mission window in 2028.

What believers are saying

  • South Park Commons highlighted Pillar in July 2026, signaling elite early validation.
  • Pillar’s website says UPLINK ACQUIRED PILLAR-01 NOMINAL, implying active mission progress.
  • Microgravity manufacturing demand strengthened in 2026 through Varda launches and BioOrbit programs.

What critics are saying

  • No disclosed funding in 2026 leaves a capital-intensive hardware program dangerously undercapitalized.
  • Northrop Grumman’s MRV launched July 2026, intensifying servicing competition before Pillar’s 2028 debut.
  • If 2028 slips, customers choose Vast, Varda, or Northrop; Pillar loses the category.

What makes Pillar Space unique

  • Only commercial team docked and undocked spacecraft three times, per Pillar and SPC.
  • Pillar sells reusable orbital infrastructure, not one-off missions, with power, data, thermal, mobility.
  • FIRST mission window 2028 targets rent-time-on-orbit demand before competitors scale.
