Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age or older; for the Canada Summer Job requirement, candidates must be between 18 and 30 years of age.
  • One year of related experience.
  • Knowledge and experience implementing programs and completing programming evaluations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for working with children, parents, and staff.
  • A completed Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening, satisfactory background check including Child Check where appropriate, and clearance through the Salvation Army child abuse registry.
  • An updated medical examination.
  • Standard First Aid and Level C CPR.
  • Completion of all required Salvation Army online, Armatus abuse, health and safety, and other training courses.
  • Ability to work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations and follow Salvation Army health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to put children at ease and create a warm, friendly, and inclusive environment.
  • Ability to communicate calmly and peacefully, maintain confidentiality, work with minimal supervision, and follow policies, procedures, and the code of ethics.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds without assistance and manage exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, noise, verbal abuse, and child tantrums.
Responsibilities
  • Support the Registered Early Childhood Educator and other Early Childhood Assistant staff in facilitating children’s development and behavior.
  • Support the implementation and evaluation of age-appropriate programs aligned with play-based learning and children’s developmental needs.
  • Use observation and documentation techniques and complete children’s daily logs and classroom program records in CRAFTS.
  • Facilitate children’s cognitive, language, social, emotional, creative, physical, and holistic development while promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Build meaningful relationships with children and families, orient families to the program, provide family resources, and advocate for children and families.
  • Identify and support individual learning and development, expand learning opportunities, and use positive behavior guidance, active listening, conflict resolution, empathy, problem-solving, and coping skills.
  • Meet children’s health, welfare, safety, nutritional, and special nutritional needs, including safe toileting, diapering, travel, off-site supervision, and emergency procedures.
  • Provide first aid and CPR, protect children from physical and emotional harm, identify and report suspected child abuse or neglect, and follow public health and childcare legislation requirements.
  • Develop and maintain safe indoor and outdoor environments; check for hazards, maintain safety protocols, and report hazards to the Registered Early Childhood Educator or supervisor.
  • Use developmentally appropriate equipment, maintain facilities, equipment, materials, and furnishings, and monitor cleanliness and sanitation.
  • Attend parent meetings, staff meetings, and other job-related activities, including activities that may occur after hours.
  • Participate in professional development, including a minimum of eight hours per year.
  • Lift and move children and equipment, set up rooms, clean facilities, and put up wall displays.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Food Handlers Certificate.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for travel to multiple locations.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
