Requirements
  • Graduate of a Medical Imaging Program.
  • Must possess the current radiography license required by the state where services will be provided: Maryland Radiographer License through the Maryland Board of Physicians; Ohio Radiographer License through the Ohio Department of Health; no state licensure required in Pennsylvania; or West Virginia Radiography License through the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board.
  • Must be nationally certified as required by the service location: Registered Radiography Technologist certification through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists upon hire in Maryland, Ohio, and West Virginia, or within six months of graduation from the Medical Imaging Program in Pennsylvania.
  • Must obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Must complete state and federal criminal background checks, as required for regulated areas.
  • Must differentiate various shades of gray and color as depicted on a monitor or photograph.
  • Must stand and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Must lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Must carry items weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Must interact positively with patients, families, and members of the health care team.
  • Must prioritize and deal with a variety of situations simultaneously.
  • Must improvise with altered positioning techniques, equipment manipulation, and accessory devices when routine positioning is compromised by a patient's condition, age, or ability.
Responsibilities
  • Perform imaging and therapeutic services and associated patient care to support the Radiology Department mission of providing diagnostic information for subsequent patient treatment.
  • Rotate through all diagnostic areas, including fluoroscopy, mobile imaging, routine imaging, operating room, endoscopy, and orthopedics, to develop technical skills.
  • Perform imaging procedures based on patient assessment, service requests, and imaging protocols.
  • Produce optimal-quality images using imaging equipment and systems for image delivery and archiving.
  • Select exposure factors based on patient size, condition, and pathology while minimizing radiation exposure.
  • Minimize radiation exposure to self, patients, and staff through shielding, collimation, application of the inverse square law, and reduction of repeat exposures.
  • Maintain expertise in anatomy, physiology, and pathology relevant to imaging to optimize procedures and ensure patient care and safety.
  • Assess patient needs and provide imaging-related comfort, hygiene, range of motion, and support.
  • Prepare contrast agents, specific pharmaceuticals, and sterile trays for imaging procedures according to procedural guidelines and protocols.
  • Educate patients about radiographic procedures by explaining procedures and answering questions.
  • Promote a team approach to Radiology services through positive interaction with technical, support, nursing, and medical staff.
  • Engage in problem solving, crisis management, systems implementation, and performance improvement throughout the hospital to support efficient, high-quality, cost-effective patient care.
  • Perform imaging techniques and patient care in accordance with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Code of Ethics, hospital and Radiology Department policies and procedures, state and federal regulations, and The Joint Commission guidelines.
  • Report equipment failures immediately after identification.
  • Complete required in-services and competencies by their due dates and apply the knowledge gained.
  • Position patients accurately in accordance with established protocols.
  • Participate in coordinating daily workflow.
  • Provide minimal instruction and clinical supervision to radiology students regarding patient positioning, technique selection, equipment manipulation, and use of accessory devices, within Radiology program policies and accrediting-body requirements.
  • Ensure that all vital components of the imaging process are completed in their entirety.
  • Work in an environment involving minimal radiation exposure monitored by Radiation Safety and dosimeter use, airborne particles and bodily fluids, and imaging equipment with automated moving parts.
