Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent, such as a General Educational Development credential or High School Proficiency Examination.
  • One year of experience as a police officer, member of a military police unit, or in other work involving the safeguarding of life and property.
  • A valid California driver's license.
  • A Basic Peace Officer Standards and Training Certificate before field-work assignment and within twelve months of hire.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of police work, including prolonged walking, standing, running, or sitting; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling; and moderate to heavy lifting and carrying.
  • Satisfactory hearing capabilities and visual acuity of at least 20/100 correctable to at least 20/30 in each eye.
  • Ability to work flexible, rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays, including day and swing shifts.
  • Ability to pass an employment, character, and background investigation, polygraph test, drug test, psychological screening, and medical examination.
  • Ability to meet the department's driving-record and vehicle-operation standards.
Responsibilities
  • Administer first aid to students, staff, and visitors.
  • Arrest individuals engaging in illegal activities.
  • Collaborate with law-enforcement, court, health-care, and community agencies on investigations, criminal activities, gang activities, vandalism, and individual cases.
  • Communicate safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff, and visitors.
  • Enforce federal, state, District, and municipal laws, rules, and policies.
  • Enforce college policies, including student ticketing and disciplinary processes.
  • Escort students, assigned personnel, and visitors to provide safety and site security.
  • Implement safety escorts for students, staff, and visitors.
  • Investigate potential campus crimes and student-related community incidents.
  • Participate in unit meetings, in-service training, and workshops.
  • Patrol college facilities, grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, and parking lots.
  • Prepare police reports, citations, incident reports, activity logs, memos, letters, and procedures.
  • Present public-safety, law-enforcement, and individual-rights information in classrooms, meetings, and staff orientations.
  • Provide traffic and parking control.
  • Report safety issues and hazards to the appropriate department.
  • Respond to accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, and other safety or security situations.
  • Respond to campus-security service calls by providing information, direction, or referrals.
  • Testify in court proceedings regarding alleged illegal activity.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A certificate of completion from a Peace Officer Standards and Training academy.
  • Completion of 60 college credits, preferably in Administration of Justice.
  • Two years of verifiable work experience.
  • One year of law-enforcement experience.
  • Specialized training in law enforcement, security, or a related field.
  • Experience working in an educational setting, preferably in community colleges.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students, faculty, and staff.
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication.
  • Effective working relationships with people contacted during work.
  • Ability to participate in meetings, workshops, events, and other college functions and represent the department.
  • Effective interpersonal skills for dealing with a diverse population of students, staff, and the general public.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Willingness to work extended hours or start early when required.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, maintain accuracy, and prioritize work with frequent interruptions.
  • Experience with conflict resolution in person, virtually, by email, or by phone; initiative, problem-solving ability, independent work, and judgment about when to seek direction.
  • Understanding of regulations for handling confidential student information.
