Requirements
  • The candidate must have two years of direct work with young people.
  • The candidate must have prior work experience with children in a recreational and/or educational setting.
  • The candidate must hold a valid driver's license and be approved to drive a 12-passenger van.
  • The candidate must have basic computer skills to access the internet and create correspondence, flyers, ministry resources, and lesson plans.
  • The candidate must be available for work and activities on Sundays.
  • The candidate must obtain and maintain all three Pennsylvania clearances: PA Child Abuse History Clearance, Request for Criminal Record, and fingerprint-based federal criminal history clearance.
  • The candidate must complete Pennsylvania mandated and permissive reporting training and The Salvation Army's KeepSAfe training.
  • The candidate must be committed to the mission of The Salvation Army.
  • The candidate must be self-motivated, organized, and creative.
  • The candidate must have written and oral communication skills.
Responsibilities
  • Work closely with corps officers to devise and implement growth plans for Sunday School and emphasize its importance to children, youth, and families.
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of youth participants in Sunday School and plan so that no child is left unsupervised in keeping with KeepSAfe policies.
  • Conduct meetings for high school-age youth that include fellowship, worship, education, and service.
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of youth participants in the youth group and plan so that no child is left unsupervised.
  • Support special ministry opportunities for the youth group, including divisional youth events such as Youth Engage, Bible Bowl, and Youth Councils.
  • Organize and implement Summer Vacation Bible School.
  • Plan, manage, and implement corps programs, including Sunbeam, Adventure Corps, Junior Soldiers, Corps Cadet, and Senior programs, under direct supervision from the corps officers.
  • Maintain required records and statistical reports.
  • Coordinate with the corps officer and corps drivers to provide transportation for scheduled activities.
  • Recruit children to attend summer camp and assist with registration.
  • Link social service clients with corps programs and worship services.
  • Attend monthly meetings for divisional youth workers and participate in trainings and best-practice discussions.
  • Attend youth-focused conferences as directed by the Divisional Youth Department.
  • Facilitate training for fellow youth workers based on experiences at youth conferences.
  • Recommend ministry resources to youth as needs arise.
  • Attend Salvation Army corps services regularly.
  • Recruit and train adult volunteers to assist with youth and teens.
  • Engage in relational ministry with young people.
  • Organize and attend divisional youth programs and encourage young people to participate.
  • Drive the van to transport youth to and from Salvation Army programs.
  • Engage in Christian spiritual conversations with the public, corps staff, and individuals.
  • Recognize and assess people's spiritual needs and refer them to a Salvation Army officer when necessary.
  • Assist the officers with various tasks during the Christmas season as ministries and services expand.
  • Work with the corps officer to develop a community outreach plan educating residents about church services.
  • Represent and uphold The Salvation Army's spiritual and social mission.
  • Pray with individuals when the opportunity or need arises.
  • Perform other duties as requested within the scope of the position.
Desired Qualifications
  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Youth Ministry or Counseling is preferred.
  • Prior work or volunteer experience with Salvation Army programming is preferred.
