  • The employee must begin the Clinical Assistant training program within one year and complete the Clinical Assistant exam within two years.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare for patient visits by reviewing charts for required forms, follow-up labs, or procedures.
  • Obtain and record age-appropriate vital signs, including temperature, height, weight, head circumference, blood pressure, respiration, pulse oximetry, and visual acuity; obtain medical-history updates and confirm medications.
  • Accurately collect and document information in patient charts, keep records organized with forms properly identified, and copy and compile medical data as needed.
  • Recognize signs or symptoms requiring prompt intervention and act appropriately; transport patients within the facility as needed; manage patient-care duties while maintaining clinic flow.
  • Report and, when appropriate, record observed changes in patients’ condition or behavior, unusual incidents, or safety breaches; ensure children, elderly patients, or impaired patients requiring observation or assistance have someone in attendance.
  • Set up equipment and supplies for routine examinations and minor procedures; prepare patients for and assist with procedures, treatments, and minor office surgeries.
  • Collect specimens and perform point-of-care testing; follow protocols for collecting, labeling, and transporting specimens; apply heat or cold packs, abdominal binders, and anti-embolism stockings when ordered; obtain 12-lead EKGs and peak-flow measurements; apply oxygen; assist patients with ambulation or transfer; and perform minor, non-invasive treatments.
  • Sanitize examination rooms between patients, process surgical equipment appropriately, ensure sterile-package integrity, and maintain a safe and clean environment.
  • Organize and stock examination-room supplies; maintain lab equipment and organize lab supplies; inventory, reorder, and stock medical supplies.
  • Dispose of solid and liquid waste and infectious materials according to infection-control standards.
  • Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly quality-assurance checks on equipment and maintain logs; use computer-based health-information and electronic health-record systems correctly; notify providers of repairs or safety concerns.
  • Answer general inquiries from nursing staff, provider staff, other departments, visitors, and patients; receive and relay messages, use proper telephone etiquette, and make patient confirmation calls as needed.
  • Perform assigned duties responsibly, respectfully, and caringly to promote effective staff relationships.
  • Provide cross-coverage for peers and clinics needing assistance to support efficient patient flow.
  • Attend and participate in at least 50% of area staff meetings annually, apply information presented, participate in unit goal setting, comply with departmental scheduling guidelines and dress code, discuss area or department issues with the department manager, refer unresolved concerns to the appropriate manager, and address employee concerns consistently with Human Resources policy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
