Sony creates and sells consumer electronics and entertainment products for a global audience. Its roots go from a Tokyo repair shop to a multinational company after adopting transistor technology and launching Japan’s first transistor radio, the TR-55, in 1955, and rebranding to Sony in 1958 to reach a broader market. Sony’s product lineup blends hardware and media experiences for everyday use, with a focus on reliable quality and recognizable brands. The company expanded internationally, becoming the first Japanese company listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1961, signaling its global ambitions. Compared with many peers, Sony combines a long history of electronics innovation with a broad entertainment footprint and a track record of global growth, giving it a wider scope than firms that focus on a single product category. Its goal is to be a leading worldwide provider of electronics and entertainment experiences that people trust and enjoy.

Sony will stop manufacturing physical PlayStation game discs from January 2028, a decision that has sparked boycott campaigns and widespread criticism from gamers. CFO Lin Tao defended the move during the company's first-quarter earnings call on 31 July, citing content digitalisation as the primary reason. Sony's financial results support the shift. During the quarter ending 30 June, the company generated approximately $1.2 billion in digital game revenue compared with about $128 million from physical game sales — a ninefold difference. Tao acknowledged consumer concerns, stating the company understands gamers' emotional attachment to physical media. However, she said Sony doesn't expect the discontinuation to negatively impact business, given that content sales are already largely digitalised. Her comments quickly spread across gaming media and online forums, illustrating how earnings call discussions now extend beyond investors to broader public audiences.
Sony and Marvel's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" set a new domestic box office record with $360 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend in the US and Canada, surpassing "Avengers: Endgame's" 2019 record of $357 million. Globally, the Tom Holland-led film earned $932 million, falling short of "Endgame's" $1.2 billion global opening record. The film achieved $169.3 million on Friday, including presales, $101.5 million on Saturday, and $88.7 million on Sunday. This marks the biggest opening weekend in Sony Pictures history and the largest debut for the Spider-Man franchise. The success came despite "Brand New Day" being excluded from Imax screens, which were occupied by Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey". The film is projected to become the fourth billion-dollar release of 2026.

Sony FX5 brings Open Gate and internal raw. Posted on Jul 23, 2026 by Adam Duckworth Triple base ISO and dual gain now while an upcoming firmware update will bring 240fps in 4K Sony has unveiled the eagerly anticipated FX5, a compact full-frame addition to its Cinema Line that introduces several major firsts for the FX series, including Open Gate recording and internal X-OCN Raw capture. Designed for filmmakers, commercial productions and high-end content creators, the FX5 combines a newly developed full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor with Sony's latest BIONZ XR2 image processor and dedicated AI processing unit. The result is a camera capable of recording 5K at up to 60fps, 4K at up to 120fps and Full HD at up to 240fps, all while delivering more than 15 stops of dynamic range in S-Log3. For the first time in an FX-series camera, users can shoot full 3:2 Open Gate footage using the entire sensor, making it ideal for projects destined for multiple aspect ratios and social media platforms. Sony has also added internal recording in its 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN Raw format, with new X-OCN C1 and C2 options reducing file sizes while maintaining high image quality and streamlining post-production. The FX5 also introduces Sony's new Dual Gain Shooting mode alongside three native ISO settings of 800, 4000 and 12,800, allowing filmmakers to maximise dynamic range while keeping noise under control across a wide range of lighting conditions. AI-powered autofocus uses human pose estimation to recognise eyes, heads and bodies, while Auto Tracing White Balance combines visible light, infrared sensing and deep-learning algorithms to deliver more consistent colour in challenging environments. Despite its powerful specification, the FX5 remains compact and lightweight, making it well suited to handheld work, gimbals and confined shooting locations. Five-axis in-body image stabilisation is joined by Dynamic Active Mode for smoother handheld footage, while a redesigned cooling system allows extended recording without overheating. The camera also features a brighter 3.5-inch multi-angle touchscreen, CineAlta-inspired BIG6 interface, wired LAN, dual USB-C ports, timecode support and compatibility with Sony's new high-capacity NP-SA100 battery. Two optional accessories launch alongside the camera. A detachable 7.07-million-dot OLED viewfinder offers HDR monitoring with up to 0.9x magnification, while a new XLR Handle Unit adds four-channel, 96kHz, 32-bit float audio recording for documentary, broadcast and professional production work. Sony has also confirmed a future firmware update will add 240fps recording in X-OCN, Open Gate XAVC S-I recording, an improved vertical shooting interface and frame-grab functionality. The Sony FX5 is available to pre-order now, with shipping expected from August. The body-only version is priced at £4700, while the version supplied with the XLR Handle Unit costs £5200.
