Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited medical assisting program as required by the certifying body.
  • Maintain Registered Medical Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or National Certified Medical Assistant credentials according to the certifying body's requirements.
  • Provide a copy of credentials to Human Resources before the certification period expires.
  • Be registered or certified as a Medical Assistant through an accepted credentialing body at the time of hire; credentials from other bodies require review and approval by the Director of Nursing.
  • Obtain CPR certification according to American Heart Association guidelines within 30 days of hire.
  • Follow clinic policies, including the Nursing Dress Code Policy, and adhere to clinic performance standards.
  • Comply with Springfield Clinic incident reporting policies and procedures.
  • Complete required OSHA and Springfield Clinic training and accomplishments according to policy.
  • Adhere to Springfield Clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the physician, optometrist, nurse practitioner or physician assistant, registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses with direct and indirect patient care, laboratory procedures, charging, and medical records.
  • Organize the nursing station and work area to facilitate workflow.
  • Organize written medical information for physician and nurse review, place it in the correct order in the medical record, and proofread appropriate dictation.
  • Assist with answering phones for physicians, nurses, and receptionists.
  • Schedule appointments according to patient needs.
  • Open and distribute mail, file office information, and organize written communications.
  • Order office supplies using cost-containment methods.
  • Order medical supplies, stock examination rooms, and clean them according to infection-control policies.
  • Interview patients to determine their chief complaint and document the information in the medical record.
  • Take vital signs and document the results.
  • Perform office procedures, such as sterile urinary catheterization, suture removal, staple removal, or cast removal, under the direction of a nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or physician.
  • Order diagnostic tests, examinations, and procedures according to physician orders.
  • Prepare patients for physician examinations.
  • Provide patients with home-care and medication instructions under the direction of a nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or physician.
  • Administer oral and subcutaneous medications under the direction of a nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or physician.
  • Administer allergy injections only under the direct supervision of the physician who prescribed the antigen.
  • Complete insurance pre-certifications and referrals as necessary.
  • Provide patient and family education and reinforce patient teaching under a provider's direction.
  • Call prescriptions in to pharmacies, provide patient instructions, and document the actions under a provider's direction.
  • Schedule procedures and surgeries as necessary.
  • Provide customer service.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • High school graduation or GED is preferred.
