About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Operations Research, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, operations engineering, production systems, or a comparable environment.
  • Strong understanding of production system design, capacity planning, line balancing, takt time, cycle-time analysis, standard work, and manufacturing flow.
  • Demonstrated experience performing time studies and translating observations into labor and capacity models.
  • Experience designing or improving manufacturing layouts and material-flow systems.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to turn imperfect production data into clear engineering and business decisions.
  • Experience identifying manufacturing constraints and driving improvements in throughput, productivity, utilization, lead time, or cost.
  • Ability to build financial and operational models that support capital expenditure, automation, make-versus-buy, and factory-scaling decisions.
  • Strong spreadsheet and data-analysis skills, with comfort working with manufacturing data from enterprise resource planning, manufacturing execution, labor-tracking, and production systems.
  • Ability to work directly on the factory floor and collaborate with technicians, manufacturing engineers, production leaders, quality engineers, supply chain, and design engineering.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to convert complex analysis into simple recommendations and executable plans.
  • Comfort identifying an ambiguous factory-level problem, defining what needs to be measured, developing a solution, and driving it through implementation.
Responsibilities
  • Own factory-level performance, scalability, and production system design by connecting individual manufacturing processes into an efficient end-to-end production system.
  • Develop and continuously improve factory and line layouts, including workstation design, material presentation, operator movement, equipment placement, and overall material flow.
  • Lead time studies, cycle-time analysis, labor modeling, and line balancing to establish production standards and improve labor efficiency.
  • Build and maintain capacity models that translate demand forecasts into requirements for labor, equipment, tooling, shifts, floor space, and capital.
  • Identify current and future production bottlenecks, quantify their impact, and lead changes that increase throughput and factory utilization.
  • Define work-in-process, buffer, queue, and rework strategies that protect production output while minimizing excess inventory and lead time.
  • Develop scalable operating strategies for products moving from prototype and pilot production into sustained higher-rate manufacturing.
  • Translate production targets into clear factory requirements and actionable scaling plans.
  • Partner with Manufacturing Engineers and Production teams to define takt time, staffing models, station loading, standard work, and production-line architecture.
  • Use production data to identify opportunities to improve throughput, cycle time, labor efficiency, utilization, work-in-process, and cost.
  • Develop demand scenarios and identify capacity constraints before they impact production.
  • Lead analysis supporting make-versus-buy decisions, including manufacturing cost, capital requirements, labor, capacity, quality, flexibility, and scaling risk.
  • Build business cases and return-on-investment analyses for automation, equipment, tooling, facility expansion, and other capital expenditure investments.
  • Evaluate where automation meaningfully improves the production system versus where simpler process, tooling, or workflow improvements provide better returns.
  • Partner with Supply Chain and Material Planning to improve lineside material availability, replenishment strategies, inventory placement, and production flow.
  • Establish factory-level key performance indicators and operating mechanisms that make performance visible and enable teams to identify and correct deviations quickly.
  • Create models, dashboards, and decision-making tools that allow Manufacturing and Operations leaders to make data-driven scaling decisions.
  • Drive continuous improvement projects from problem definition through implementation and measurable production impact.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience scaling a complex electromechanical product from new product introduction or low-rate production into higher-volume manufacturing.
  • Experience with discrete-event simulation, optimization, operations research, or other production-system modeling techniques.
  • Experience with SQL, Python, business intelligence tools, or other methods for analyzing large manufacturing datasets.
  • Experience with enterprise resource planning and manufacturing execution system platforms and developing manufacturing dashboards or operational reporting systems.
  • Experience developing business cases for automation or major manufacturing equipment.
  • Experience with Lean manufacturing concepts, Theory of Constraints, process failure mode and effects analysis, value-stream mapping, or structured continuous-improvement methodologies.
  • Experience supporting factory expansions, new production lines, or greenfield manufacturing operations.

About the company

Zipline builds and operates autonomous drone delivery networks for retailers, restaurants and healthcare systems that need to move products without road traffic. Its electric aircraft carry food, prescriptions and other supplies from partner sites or distribution hubs to customers and health facilities. The company combines aircraft, charging equipment and delivery software with flight operations, so partners buy a logistics service rather than manage their own drones. Merchants use its ordering and tracking tools to reach customers, while governments and health systems contract for medical supply delivery. Zipline was founded in 2014 and has its headquarters in South San Francisco, California.

What believers are saying

  • Growth teams have fresh funding: Zipline raised over $600 million in January 2026 to expand delivery operations.
  • Consumer distribution is widening: Zipline announced Uber Eats integration in August 2026, with first deliveries planned later that year.
  • Operations extend beyond pilots: Zipline reported over 2.7 million completed deliveries across four continents in August 2026.

What critics are saying

  • New Texas scale is pending: Zipline's September 2026 five-metro proposal remains under FAA environmental review.
  • Bulk deliveries face a weight ceiling: Zipline's proposed Texas P2 aircraft have an eight-pound payload limit.
  • Field testing disrupts regular hours: Zipline's Esparto operator posting requires nights, weekends and occasional regional travel.

What makes Zipline unique

  • Its delivery pod steers itself: Zipline lowers an autonomous robot on a tether while the larger aircraft stays overhead.
  • Different docks share capacity: Zipline's P2 aircraft fly between docks and recharge before taking the next delivery.
  • Public health is a core customer: Zipline runs Rwanda's national blood-delivery network alongside its US consumer service.

Zipline secures 8-year Côte d'Ivoire deal to serve 12M people with drone delivery

US drone logistics company Zipline will expand operations in Côte d'Ivoire, building nine additional facilities to complement its existing site operational since 2023. The expansion aims to serve 12 million people, roughly a third of the Ivorian population, over the next eight years. During its three-year pilot programme, Zipline delivered nearly 4 million medical products — primarily vaccines and blood — to more than 200 healthcare centres in a region northwest of Abidjan. The Ivorian government will cover operating costs including pharmacy-grade warehousing, cold chain management, digital tracking, and delivery for eight years. Zipline expects the government to achieve a three-fold return on its investment, though the company declined to disclose the exact financial terms. The deal represents growing African government adoption of drone technology for delivering social services to hard-to-reach areas.
