A New York college said a Christian club must let non-Christians lead prayer. Now they're suing. The Becket Fund filed a federal lawsuit against SUNY Broome on behalf of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship - the third such case this year. Published: Sept 3, 2026, 11:07 a.m. MDT View 12 Comments Reagan Campbell is a general assignment reporter for the Deseret News Utah, Politics and the West team. NEW: Try Article Audio Audio quality: | The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty late last month filed a lawsuit against SUNY Broome Community College on behalf of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship after the school declined to recognize the student group. Tensions rose when the Christian student ministry InterVarsity was not officially recognized on SUNY Broome's campus due to the condition that "it may operate on campus only if it is willing to let non-Christians lead its prayer, worship, and Bible teaching," according to a Becket press release. Colten Stanberry, counsel at Becket and lead attorney for InterVarsity, told the Deseret News they intervened when they "heard about this case from InterVarsity." He said, "We felt like InterVarsity's religious beliefs were being violated; it aligns with our mission, and we wanted to step in." InterVarsity has over 1,000 chapters nationwide and welcomes members from all faith backgrounds. "Everyone is welcome. You don't have to be a Christian to walk through our door. We just ask that students who lead our prayers and worship actually share the faith they are helping others live out. A public college shouldn't exclude us for that," said Jake Sonner, InterVarsity Broome member. InterVarsity Christian Fellowship is a group that focuses on reaching people of all faiths on campuses. Its purpose is to grow, "in love for God, God's Word, God's people of every ethnicity and culture, and God's purposes in the world." In April 2024, a chapter was started on SUNY Broome's campus as more students began to gather for Bible studies and prayer. It was then they decided to receive official recognition from the school. According to Becket, "InterVarsity repeatedly asked SUNY Broome to reconsider and pointed to federal court cases around the country - including two in favor of InterVarsity - ruling that religious student groups can have religious leaders. But the college refused to budge." Stanberry said InterVarsity needed to proceed with litigation. SUNY Broome declined to comment on the pending litigation. Stanberry described the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty as "a nonprofit law firm. We represent peoples of all faiths with the aim of promoting religious liberty for all people." This will be the third InterVarsity case Becket has taken to court this year regarding leadership standards. Looking for comments? Find comments in their new home! InterVarsity and Gloo announce strategic technology partnership

InterVarsity and Gloo announce strategic technology partnership. MADISON, Wis. - InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA today announced a strategic technology partnership with Gloo, a leading technology company serving the faith and flourishing ecosystem. The collaboration is designed to strengthen InterVarsity's technology foundation, enabling the organization to scale its ministry across college campuses nationwide, while staying focused on its core mission. "Meeting the growing technology demands of ministries has become increasingly challenging, especially given nonprofit budget constraints," said Kim Porter, Chief Operations Officer at InterVarsity. "Gloo provides a way for ministries to combine our technology capabilities, giving each of us access to expertise and resources we couldn't sustain independently." InterVarsity has collaborated with Gloo for more than eight years on key initiatives including the EveryCampus website. Since its official launch in 2018, the EveryCampus platform has been instrumental in decreasing the number of campuses without a gospel movement from more than 1,300 campuses to fewer than 500 campuses. This new strategic partnership significantly deepens that relationship. Through Gloo360, Gloo's subscription-based enterprise technology, data and consulting platform, InterVarsity will receive end-to-end technology management services spanning IT infrastructure, cybersecurity and enterprise systems, providing a resilient, scalable technology backbone that supports long-term ministry growth. "This partnership benefits our current technology staff while simultaneously advancing InterVarsity's broader ministry goals. Our technology team will transition to Gloo360, where they will continue serving InterVarsity's needs while contributing to a shared platform that benefits the broader community of faith-based organizations," added Paul Kulp, who has served as InterVarsity's Vice President of Technology for the past seven years. "We're excited about the possibilities this collaboration creates for serving students and faculty across the U.S." "We are honored to expand our partnership with InterVarsity," said Paul Alexander, Senior Vice President, Gloo360. "Having served with Cru in the campus ministry space for 30 years, I understand both the mission and distinct needs of these ministries. By strengthening InterVarsity's technology capabilities, we can help their teams spend less time managing systems and more time engaging students and faculty in meaningful ways across campuses nationwide." InterVarsity joins a growing number of large ministries partnering with Gloo to modernize their technology operations through Gloo's shared services offerings, reflecting a broader shift towards collaboration and efficiency across the faith and nonprofit ecosystem.
