Requirements
  • A certified medical assistant license is required.
  • Five years of medical assistant experience are required.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Analytical thinking is required to analyze information, coordinate work within schedule constraints, and handle emergent requirements in a timely manner.
  • Knowledge of EPIC software is required; the role may be required to serve as an EPIC super user.
  • All training and competency requirements must be met.
  • The ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure under Texas EO-GA-48 may be required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform general clinical duties, including taking vital signs, giving injections, performing simple diagnostic tests, collecting specimens, sterilizing and cleaning equipment, and maintaining examination rooms at an outpatient care site.
  • Perform administrative duties and support documentation of patient records as directed by the physician or provider.
  • Support the mission, vision, and patient promise throughout all interactions.
  • Participate as an integral part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing patient care.
  • Intake patients by obtaining vital signs and weight.
  • Obtain patient history, chief complaint, medications, and allergies, and document them appropriately in the electronic medical record.
  • Report pertinent findings to physicians.
  • Manage patient appointments according to physician schedules and protocols.
  • Answer patient messages according to clinic policy.
  • Handle medication refills and requests according to clinic policy.
  • Prepare charts for the next scheduled clinic and provide physicians with requested test results, laboratory results, and medical records.
  • Communicate necessary patient information to the physician in a timely manner.
  • Handle external and internal phone calls and assist the department call center by transferring calls to appropriate departments.
  • Perform point-of-care testing, document clinical findings, and report them to the registered nurse in charge and/or provider.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
Desired Qualifications
  • Provide in-service training and precept Medical Assistants.
  • Participate in developing best practices in clinical workflows.
