Requirements
Graduation from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing is required for nurse practitioner candidates.
National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse certification centers is required for nurse practitioner candidates.
Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia is required for nurse practitioner candidates.
American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
A Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is required for physician assistant candidates.
Graduation from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine is required.
Eligible new graduates will be considered.

The role requires the ability to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
The role requires working closely with others, working protracted or irregular hours, and working around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
Provide high-quality, patient-centered care as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
Assess, diagnose, treat, and manage patients within the applicable scope of practice and specialty.
Promote positive patient outcomes, maintain professional and regulatory standards, and support the clinical, educational, and operational goals of the department and organization.
Coordinate and clinically manage comprehensive preoperative patient care, including biological, social, and psychological assessments.
Coordinate the involvement of medical and surgical specialty teams to develop comprehensive patient optimization plans.
Review plans of care with other clinical-team members and participate in directing care.
Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and coordinate surgical planning as applicable.
Participate in educating residents and medical and nursing students.
Provide healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the applicable professional licensing or certification authority and hospital privileges.
Provide consultation services for comprehensive and individualized care for preoperative patients and their families.
Complete optimization evaluations and pre-procedure or pre-surgical evaluations.
Complete integrated assessments.
Order additional tests or consultations when appropriate, in collaboration with preoperative faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
Consult and communicate with clinic, surgical, and hospital staff regarding abnormal evaluation findings.
Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
Facilitate patient optimization by coordinating services and tests needed before surgery during the perioperative phase of care.
Develop individualized preoperative plans of care that include teaching, surgical and medical planning, and referrals to other healthcare-team members.
Provide care for patients across the applicable age continuum.
Identify unstable or complex preoperative-care situations and initiate appropriate intervention in the clinic or hospital.
Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
Evaluate preoperative patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting as applicable.
Assist with collecting outcome measures as applicable.
Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making to identify, evaluate, and manage the individual needs of patients and families.
Use equipment safely.
Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, established standards of care, best outcomes, and research findings.
Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
Promote an environment that supports learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
Update professional knowledge throughout the year.
Complete all identified clinical competencies.
Serve as a resource for staff caring for preoperative patients.
Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate in the area of expertise.
Document each patient's plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the medical record according to approved hospital and University Health Associates policies and compliance standards.
Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve optimal patient outcomes based on improvements in care.
Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in preoperative practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate problem-solving and provide professional support.
Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
Promote and practice an expanded role in delivering care to preoperative patients and families throughout inpatient hospitalization and ambulatory care.
Participate in and provide leadership for assigned committees and task forces.
Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
Review and interpret preoperative data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length-of-stay data, access-to-care data, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
Assist preoperative faculty, administrators, and directors with collecting outcome measures.
Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
Preoperative and/or acute-care experience is preferred.
A Master's Degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR NURSE PRACTITIONER:
