Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Must possess a current, valid Registered Nurse license in the state of practice, a temporary Registered Nurse license in the state of practice, or compact Registered Nurse licensure for the current state of practice.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Additional certification or continuing education may be required based on the area of practice.
  • Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.
  • Possess physical agility and adequate reaction time to respond quickly and appropriately to unexpected patient care needs.
  • Needs adequate hearing and visual acuity, including adequate color vision.
  • Requires fine motor skills, adequate eye-hand coordination, and ability to grasp and handle objects.
  • Able to use proper body mechanics to assist patients in ambulating and transferring patients in and out of bed, a chair, or a wheelchair.
  • May be required to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Must use standard precautions due to the threat of exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
  • Needs the ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on the telephone.
  • May require periodic use of a personal computer.
Responsibilities
  • Check patients in upon arrival.
  • Use the electronic medical record to obtain vital signs, review systems, medication lists, family and social histories, and review medical records for completeness before the physician sees the patient.
  • Ensure appropriate supplies are available for patient visits and procedures, and ensure rooms are sterile and safe.
  • Triage patient phone calls and medication requests.
  • Support physicians with in-office procedures.
  • Administer refrigeration-control logs and sample-medication receiving and distribution logs.
  • Ensure quality patient care and adhere to provider preferences for patients.
  • Explain procedures and treatments and reinforce provider recommendations using the AIDET process.
  • Provide prescribed sample medications in accordance with approved nursing techniques.
  • Administer injections and immunizations as prescribed by providers.
  • Use the electronic health record to record visits and patient information, including vital signs, review of systems, medication lists, family and social history, accurately.
  • Provide point-of-care testing, record test results and procedural documentation in the patient chart, and report results to providers for further instructions or sign-off.
  • Maintain sample medications by logging their receipt and documenting them in the patient chart.
  • Send written, verbal, or computer-generated requests for prescription refills to pharmacies as requested by the provider.
  • Track laboratory and procedure orders.
  • Communicate clinical data and test or procedure results accurately to the healthcare team.
  • Initiate a patient education plan as prescribed by the physician or clinic policy.
  • Communicate and instruct the plan of care to patients, families, or guardians, and document understanding in the patient chart.
  • Complete and document patient phone calls in the patient chart.
  • Assist with office procedures as requested by the physician.
  • Administer intravenous medications, treatments, and procedures as prescribed by the physician under the scope of practice.
