Requirements
  • No prior experience is necessary.
  • A high school diploma or General Education Degree is preferred.
  • Successful completion of a state-approved Nursing Assistant program is required.
  • The employee must obtain and maintain mandatory state and federal requirements and certifications for practice or occupation.
  • The employee must be able to assist patients during therapy.
  • Special care and dementia care employees will receive additional training in caring for and treating dementia residents.
  • The employee must communicate effectively with residents and nursing staff and have strong interpersonal skills.
  • The employee must be able to read, write, understand, and speak the English language.
  • The employee must be able to use a computer for charting purposes.
  • The employee must be able to operate Sit to Stand equipment, Hoyer Lifts, gait belts, and tub chairs.
  • The employee must be dependable and compassionate toward residents and committed to assisting them.
  • The employee must be able to work with elderly residents, families, and other health care staff members.
  • The employee must participate in continuing education.
  • The employee must adhere to all terms and conditions set forth in the United Church Homes Employee Handbook.
Responsibilities
  • Participate in and receive nursing report upon reporting for duty.
  • Assist residents at mealtimes.
  • Assist with resident care, including bathing, grooming, hygiene, and placement of adaptive equipment.
  • Explain procedures to residents before administering them and drape residents for examination and treatment.
  • Keep residents dry by changing clothing and linens when wet or soiled.
  • Assist residents with bowel and bladder functions.
  • Empty urinary drainage bags, record the amount in the record, and report irregularities to the nurse.
  • Assist with lifting, positioning, and transporting residents into and out of beds, chairs, bathtubs, wheelchairs, and lifts according to resident safety needs.
  • Assist residents in ambulation with or without self-help devices as instructed.
  • Perform restorative and rehabilitative procedures as instructed.
  • Ensure call lights are within residents’ reach and answer them promptly.
  • Ensure residents’ personal care needs are met according to their wishes.
  • Report all changes in residents’ condition to the supervisor as soon as practical.
  • Change bed linens and keep linens tight to prevent wrinkles under residents; handle linens according to infection control guidelines.
  • Maintain cleanliness of resident units, the central bathing area, treatment and supply rooms, workrooms, and linen closets.
  • Assist residents in preparing for and transporting them to appointments, activities, and social programs.
  • Use creative problem solving to meet resident needs within the scope of responsibility.
  • Provide post-mortem care as instructed.
  • Perform required special nursing care duties, including identifying and reporting abnormal skin conditions.
  • Ensure residents are positioned and prepared appropriately for meals, serve food, assist with feeding as necessary, ensure proper hydration, and assist in delivering and documenting snacks and supplements.
  • Accurately record entries on flow sheets, intake and output records, and other documents at the point of care as required.
  • Participate in care conferences as indicated and follow individual resident care plans.
  • Perform admission, discharge, and transfer duties as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality of necessary information.
  • Use supplies and equipment properly and without waste, including restocking supplies.
  • Report structural, equipment, and furniture defects and malfunctions to appropriate personnel.
  • Handle unusual occurrences calmly and logically to maintain continuity of duties.
  • Maintain effective communication with residents and their families or other significant relationships.
  • Follow safety and security guidelines, care procedures, and protocols for residents in the Dementia Care Unit.
  • Participate in relevant educational and training activities as appropriate.
  • Participate in special activities as necessary, including safety committee activities and mentoring, orientation, or training of new hires.
  • Label and charge ancillary items for resident billing.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned or directed.
