TSNE (Third Sector New England) helps mission-driven nonprofits grow by providing back-office support and shared services. It offers fiscal sponsorship, property management, consulting, and HR services so smaller organizations can operate with the administrative efficiency of larger ones. Instead of focusing on research or programs alone, TSNE manages finance, legal compliance, HR, and related operations for a portfolio of nonprofits, allowing them to concentrate on their social missions. TSNE differentiates itself by acting as a capacity-building partner—like a venture-capital-style support system for the nonprofit sector—helping organizations scale through centralized services and financial stability. Its goal is to enable more nonprofits to achieve their missions by reducing operational burdens and providing resources, guidance, and funding-backed infrastructure, as evidenced by the January 2024 grant from the Barr Foundation to launch a Shared Services initiative.

What believers are saying

  • TSNE stewarded more than $44 million in project funds as of 2026.
  • Fifty projects with 356 employees create recurring administrative revenue and sticky relationships.
  • Leadership New England 2026 and 2025 Shared Services updates show active product expansion.

What critics are saying

  • TSNE depends on major funders like Barr Foundation, exposing 2027 renewal risk.
  • Its application process takes 2-3 months and requires reserves, shrinking deal flow.
  • If Shared Services stalls, TSNE remains a niche nonprofit middleman, not indispensable infrastructure.

What makes TSNE unique

  • TSNE has sponsored 300 projects and organizations across 35 states for 60 years.
  • Its Model A and Model C sponsorship combines finance, HR, legal, and grants management.
  • The 2024 Barr Foundation-backed Shared Services launch extends TSNE beyond fiscal sponsorship.
