About the job

Requirements
  • A DVM/VMD or equivalent is required, and candidates must be licensed or eligible for licensure in California.
  • Substantial hands-on experience with large-animal welfare and anesthesia is required; research or surgical setting experience is ideal, and porcine experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with ventilated anesthesia, arterial and central line monitoring, and managing hemodynamically complex patients through long procedures is required.
  • Familiarity with IACUC processes and USDA/OLAW regulations is required.
Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver general anesthesia for large animal models undergoing organ procurement, long-duration perfusion procedures, and survival surgeries, including induction, intubation, mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, and fluid and pharmacological support.
  • Provide clinical veterinary oversight for all research animals, including health assessments on arrival, quarantine and acclimation, preventive care, and diagnosis and treatment of illness.
  • Direct post-operative care, analgesia, and welfare monitoring for survival surgery animals, and write the monitoring plans that veterinary technicians carry out.
  • Help build the vivarium, including SOPs, anesthesia and surgical protocols, occupational health and biosecurity practices, and staff training and competency records.
  • Work with the IACUC on protocol design, amendments, and inspections, and maintain compliance with USDA Animal Welfare Act and PHS/OLAW requirements.
  • Ensure veterinary care, perioperative management, and monitoring practices meet current veterinary standards and ethical research principles.
  • Supervise and mentor the veterinary technician and animal care team, and oversee operating room scheduling, animal ordering, drug inventory including controlled substances and DEA records, and equipment purchasing.
  • Work with scientists and engineers to refine procurement physiology, including warm ischemia, heparinization, and perfusion cannulation timing, to improve organ outcomes.
Desired Qualifications
  • Porcine experience is strongly preferred.
  • DACLAM, DACVAA, or equivalent residency training is a strong plus.
  • Experience setting up or managing an animal facility, or supervising technical staff, is a plus.

About the company

UntilLabs develops reversible cryopreservation technology to extend the viability of human organs for transplantation. The goal is to keep organs alive at cryogenic temperatures long enough to improve organ matching and reduce waste from time limits, potentially weeks or months of preserved time. The approach uses cooling to very low temperatures (below -130°C) with cryoprotectants to prevent ice damage, followed by advanced warming methods to revive the organs without harm. While cryopreservation has worked for cells and simple tissues, UntilLabs works on scaling this to whole organs, tackling challenges like ice formation and nutrient/waste management in large tissues. In the long term, the company envisions whole-body reversible cryopreservation as a bridge to future medical cures.

What believers are saying

  • 2026 hiring spans perfusion, cardiac biology, and organ perfusion, signaling active R&D expansion.
  • Pig organ isolation and ex-vivo evaluation roles suggest near-term preclinical organ validation.
  • The 2026 patent strengthens defensibility around cryoprotectants, vitrification, and rewarming hardware.

What critics are saying

  • X-Therma already has FDA Breakthrough status and 120-hour kidney preservation claims.
  • Until still has no public human transplant data, leaving commercialization unproven.
  • Whole-body cryopreservation messaging invites regulatory scrutiny and distracts from organ preservation execution.

What makes UntilLabs unique

  • Founders Fund, Lux, and Field backed Until Labs' 2025 $58M Series A.
  • Until's 2026 site says it has raised $100M+ and is hiring.
  • Its patent for reversible cryopreservation covers perfusion, pressure, and volumetric rewarming.
