Requirements
  • Ability to pass the Department of Transportation-required background check, physical examinations, and pre-employment and continuing drug and alcohol screenings.

  • Ability to recognize classes of chemicals and chemicals that can become unstable during extended storage.
  • Broad-based computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
  • Two years of related work experience in the same job family and a Bachelor's degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Knowledge of chemistry, biology, and physics to perform necessary tasks and recognize potentially dangerous situations.
  • At least one year of work experience segregating and lab packing chemical hazardous waste according to Department of Transportation requirements for disposal and managing a chemical hazardous waste program.
  • Obtain a Connecticut commercial driver's license with hazardous materials endorsement within the first 90 days of employment and maintain it.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 500 pounds of waste material using rolling carts or drum carts.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, twist, and negotiate awkward paths of travel and doorways.
  • Ability to push large wheeled carts throughout hallways, in and out of autoclaves, elevators, and tight spaces.
  • Ability to lift and move supplies from warehouse to customer locations using a truck lift gate and cart.
  • Ability to remove large containers weighing up to 200 pounds from horizontal chest freezers using lift-arm equipment.
  • Ability to wear and use personal protective equipment for hazardous-material handling and spill cleanup, including respirators, safety shoes, goggles, gloves, and a fully encapsulating protective suit.
  • Ability to carry harness-mounted air tanks and wear and use a self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Ability to work in varied physical environments, including weather extremes, potential confined spaces, and elevated locations.
Responsibilities
  • Identify and safely handle classes of regulated waste.
  • Collect and transport regulated waste from generators to a storage area or treatment location via hallways or vehicle while following Environmental Health and Safety standard operating procedures and applicable local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Lab-pack chemicals according to Department of Transportation specifications and fingerprint unknown chemicals.
  • Interact with faculty, staff, and vendor employees regarding compliant collection and storage of regulated waste.
  • Assist in setting up and maintaining Resource Conservation and Recovery Act satellite accumulation areas.
  • Provide oversight of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act 90-day storage areas.
  • Provide specialized information and training when necessary.
  • Provide direction to other technicians in waste-management tasks.
  • Ensure proper packaging and arrange for biomedical waste disposal through a commercial vendor.
  • Treat biomedical waste using an autoclave/shredder unit.
  • Schedule timely waste pickups and treatment.
  • Ensure proper temperature and pressure performance of the autoclave unit weekly.
  • Ensure timely preventive maintenance for autoclave and shredder units.
  • Evaluate, with the supervisor, biomedical-waste handling and autoclave/shredder operation to ensure proper technique and personal protective equipment use.
  • Perform radiation surveys and inspect Environmental Health and Safety Environmental Affairs Section waste-storage facilities.
  • Develop awareness of principles concerning the decay and survey of radioactive materials.
  • Survey and dispose of decayed waste.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation, including radioactive-waste packages and documentation for off-site disposal.
  • Deliver supplies to laboratories and other areas as required.
  • Assist with environmental compliance programs and perform other functions supporting Environmental Health and Safety programs.
  • Create and maintain databases and documents supporting various Environmental Affairs Section programs.
  • Maintain waste paperwork and reporting.
  • Participate during work hours as a member of the Environmental Health and Safety on-call emergency response team.
  • Maintain all required licenses, certifications, and training.
  • Perform other duties as requested.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Environmental Sciences is preferred.
  • Department of Transportation HM-181 training is required after hire.
  • A 24-hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration HAZWOPER certification is required after hire.
  • A commercial driver's license with hazardous materials endorsement is required after hire.
