Requirements
- A graduate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program is required.
- Current Nurse Practitioner/APRN licensure in Iowa, or the ability to obtain Iowa licensure before starting, is required.
- Current national board certification as a Nurse Practitioner is required.
- Current DEA registration, or the ability to obtain it before providing prescribing services, is required.
- Prescriptive authority in accordance with Iowa requirements is required.
- Ability to maintain all required professional licenses, certifications, and continuing education requirements is required.
- Current BLS/CPR certification, or the ability to obtain it as required, is required.
- Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills are required.
- Strong communication, documentation, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills are required.
- Knowledge of HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 confidentiality requirements is required.
Responsibilities
- Complete comprehensive medical evaluations and ongoing patient assessments.
- Evaluate patients with substance use disorders and co-occurring medical and behavioral health conditions.
- Develop and manage individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team.
- Prescribe and manage medications within the scope of practice and applicable state and federal requirements.
- Provide medication-assisted treatment and medications for opioid use disorder, including buprenorphine and other appropriate medications.
- Monitor medication effectiveness, side effects, adherence, and patient response to treatment.
- Order and interpret appropriate laboratory testing and diagnostic studies.
- Conduct follow-up visits and ongoing medication management.
- Assess patients for withdrawal symptoms, relapse risk, medication concerns, and changes in medical or behavioral condition.
- Provide patient education regarding medications, recovery, harm reduction, wellness, and treatment expectations.
- Coordinate care with therapists, case managers, peer recovery professionals, primary care providers, pharmacies, hospitals, and other community providers.
- Participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings and case consultation.
- Support appropriate referrals for higher levels of care or specialty medical services when needed.
- Respond appropriately to medical, behavioral, and psychiatric concerns within the outpatient setting.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation in the electronic health record.
- Ensure documentation supports medical necessity, continuity of care, and regulatory and payer requirements.
- Follow medication management, controlled-substance, prescription-monitoring, and patient-safety procedures.
- Participate in quality improvement and clinical performance initiatives.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and company policy.
- Help establish strong clinical workflows, medication-management processes, and patient-care standards as part of the opening team.
Desired Qualifications
- Family Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, or other appropriate Nurse Practitioner certification is considered based on experience.
- Experience in addiction medicine, behavioral health, psychiatry, primary care, or substance use disorder treatment is strongly preferred.
- Experience providing medication-assisted treatment and medications for opioid use disorder is preferred.
- Knowledge of opioid, alcohol, stimulant, and other substance use disorders is preferred.
- Experience managing co-occurring behavioral health conditions is preferred.
