MACOMB, IL - - Meet Deborah Bowale, a new Health Administration Intern with Advocate Health after completing her Master of Public Health degree at Western Illinois University. Bowale joined Advocate Health, one of the largest nonprofit integrated health systems in the United States, serving millions of patients across multiple states. As a Health Administration Intern, she works at Aurora Medical Center Kenosha and Aurora Medical Center Mount Pleasant in Wisconsin, collaborating with hospital executive leadership on projects related to care management, hospital readmissions, discharge planning, length of stay and population health improvement. She discovered the opportunity through LinkedIn and pursued it because it aligned closely with her interests in healthcare leadership and population health. The hiring process included submitting an application, interviewing with health system leaders and discussing her previous healthcare experiences, professional background and career aspirations. Following several conversations with organizational leaders, she was selected for the competitive internship position. Reflecting on her time at WIU, Bowale highlighted the valuable knowledge and skills she gained through the Master of Public Health program. She noted that her coursework strengthened her understanding of public health, healthcare systems, population health management and data-driven decision-making. Through the program, she developed expertise in program planning, health policy, quality improvement and evaluating the factors that influence health outcomes. Bowale credits her WIU education with helping her think strategically about healthcare challenges and equipping her with the skills needed to identify solutions that improve patient care and community health. Advocate Health breaks ground on new $300M Trinity Hospital in Chicago. Development Site * Advocate Health Care has officially started construction on a new $300 million Trinity Hospital on Chicago's South Side. * The five-story hospital will be built on a 23-acre site at 8000 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive and replace the existing 115-year-old Advocate Trinity Hospital. * The project is part of Advocate's broader $1 billion investment aimed at expanding healthcare access and economic opportunities across the South Side. What the new hospital includes. Advocate Health Care has broken ground on its long-awaited replacement for Advocate Trinity Hospital, marking a major milestone for healthcare infrastructure on Chicago's South Side. The new facility will rise at 8000 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive on the former U.S. Steel South Works site. The project carries a price tag of approximately $300 million and is expected to open in 2029. Designed by CannonDesign, the hospital will contain approximately 183,000 square feet across five stories and feature 52 inpatient beds. The facility will include medical-surgical units, ICU beds, observation and dialysis beds, a modern emergency department with 16 treatment bays, advanced imaging services, a cardiac catheterization lab, and robotic surgical capabilities. What the Development Site looks like. The hospital will occupy a 23-acre lakefront site bounded by DuSable Lake Shore Drive, Brandon Avenue, and 81st Street. Plans call for 368 parking spaces and multiple access points designed to improve patient and visitor circulation. Renderings released earlier this year show a modern design featuring curved glass facades, metal paneling, and expansive views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. The structure is organized with a two-story clinical base and a three-story patient tower above. What this means for Chicago's South Side. The new hospital is replacing the current Advocate Trinity Hospital located at 93rd Street and Oglesby Avenue, which has served the community for more than a century. While the new facility will be smaller than the existing hospital, Advocate says it will deliver more modern care through updated technology, expanded outpatient services, and improved patient experience. The project is also expected to create jobs and support broader neighborhood revitalization efforts. Advocate has committed to hiring approximately 1,000 new employees across its South Chicagoland operations by the end of 2027 as part of its larger healthcare investment strategy. What the broader redevelopment includes. The hospital is one of the first major projects moving forward within the larger redevelopment of the former South Works steel mill property. The master-planned district is being led by Related Midwest and is expected to bring new healthcare, research, commercial, and mixed-use development to the lakefront site over the coming years. For Chicago's South Side, the groundbreaking represents more than a healthcare project.
