Requirements
  • A J.D. from an American Bar Association-accredited law school and a valid license to practice law in New York State.
  • At least 8 years of relevant legal experience, including meaningful experience supporting intellectual property licensing, consumer products, entertainment, or related commercial transactions in-house or at a nationally recognized law firm.
  • Proven ability to effectively execute assigned priorities and initiatives concerning specific assignments and general policies.
  • A demonstrated track record of ownership and accountability for projects, duties, and tasks.
  • The ability to manage up by proactively seeking clarification and alignment, and communicating priorities, risks, and progress with stakeholders and leadership.
  • Experience leveraging legal technology, including artificial-intelligence-assisted legal research and drafting tools such as Harvey, Claude, or similar platforms, as well as contract lifecycle management platforms and approval workflow tools.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Strong commercial judgment and the ability to balance legal risk against business objectives.
Responsibilities
  • Draft, review, and negotiate agreements relating to intellectual property and consumer products licensing, with an emphasis on trademarks and copyrights, endorsements, character appearances, sponsorships, and location-based events.
  • Prepare and negotiate permission and clearance agreements, term sheets, agreements and rules for sweepstakes and contests, legal letters, and settlement agreements.
  • Develop contract templates, playbooks, and internal guidance to improve efficiency and consistency.
  • Identify legal and commercial risks and develop practical, business-oriented solutions.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams on new business initiatives, strategic partnerships, and product launches.
  • Serve as a trusted legal advisor to senior business stakeholders throughout the lifecycle of licensing and commercial initiatives.
  • Provide advice and counsel regarding trademarks, copyrights, and other intellectual property.
  • Coordinate directly with business development, brand management, and marketing teams.
  • Enable the business to achieve its targets while respecting company principles and applicable laws, and assist in embedding these principles into company processes and decisions.
  • Implement and oversee corporate policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Partner with internal and external counsel on ongoing general matters for the Legal Department as required for the day-to-day functioning of the Company and Legal Department.
  • Support brand protection and anti-counterfeiting efforts, including coordinating cease-and-desist activity and working with the Intellectual Property Department on monitoring and enforcement programs.
  • Advise on children’s advertising and privacy compliance, including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, Federal Trade Commission guidelines, and Children’s Advertising Review Unit advertising standards, as applicable to kids-focused brands and licensees.
  • Assist with royalty audits by reviewing audit-rights provisions, coordinating with Finance on licensee audits, and interpreting royalty reports and statements.
  • Manage the lifecycle of existing licensing agreements, including renewals, terminations, defaults, and cure notices.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience with character licensing, entertainment intellectual property, or children’s brand licensing.
  • Experience with children’s brands, family entertainment intellectual property, or consumer products targeting minors.
  • Proficiency in one or more additional languages beyond English.

Authentic Brands Group acquires majority stake in Drake's OVO lifestyle brand

Authentic Brands Group has acquired a majority stake in Drake's lifestyle brand October's Very Own (OVO). The Canadian rapper will retain a minority stake and continue to shape the brand's creative vision. Authentic is partnering with Vince Holding Corp. on design, product development and retailing of OVO products. Drake described Authentic and Vince as "the perfect partners" to help grow the brand he started in Toronto 20 years ago. Jamie Salter, founder and executive chairman of Authentic, praised OVO's cultural influence and sees opportunities to expand into new markets globally. Authentic has become the second largest licensor in the US behind Disney through celebrity partnerships and brand acquisitions including Brooks Brothers, Champion and Sports Illustrated.
