How a bankrupt Wisconsin slaughterhouse became a $1.6B meat snacks empire

A Wisconsin slaughterhouse owner turned bankruptcy into a billion-dollar meat snacks empire. Jack Link was 40 when his business filed for bankruptcy protection in 1985. Searching for a turnaround product, he began making beef jerky using a family recipe. Link Snacks now generates over $1.6 billion in annual retail sales, according to Nielsen IQ data. The family-owned company operates eight brands including Jack Link's and Lorissa's Organic Snacks in a US market worth more than $5 billion. The business expanded by acquiring regional competitors and later purchased Unilever's meat snacks division in 2014. In 2025, it opened a $450 million manufacturing facility in Georgia. Chief executive Troy Link, who succeeded his father in 2013, faces rising beef prices driven partly by tariffs. The company raised prices by at least 10% in 2025 and competes against Hormel Foods and emerging brands like Chomps.

Jack Link's: From bankruptcy to $4B meat snack empire with 'soap and water

Link Snacks, the company behind Jack Link's meat snacks, has grown from a family bankruptcy into a roughly $4 billion global protein empire. CEO Troy Link, second-generation leader, shared the company's journey on the How Success Happens podcast. The business began when Troy's father turned a failing meat operation into jerky production, using existing assets: thousands of pounds of meat, smokehouses and knowledge. Troy attributes success to focus, grit and maintaining hospital-level cleanliness, which allows products with as few as three ingredients. Recently, the company made significant investments including a $450 million plant, German expansion and major automation across facilities. Troy explains they invested ahead of demand after being "so sold out" during COVID that they couldn't serve customers. The company controls operations "from the cow to the consumer".
