About the company

Jane Street trades stocks, bonds, options, and exchange-traded funds with its own money as a market maker, a firm that constantly quotes prices to buy and sell so other investors can trade whenever they want. In 2025, it made more money from trading than JPMorgan Chase or Goldman Sachs, the biggest trading banks on Wall Street. Its traders, researchers, and engineers build computer-driven strategies that trade on exchanges and other venues around the world, and it also trades directly with large institutional clients. It earns the small gap between buying and selling prices across huge volumes, plus gains on positions it holds for minutes to days. Jane Street was founded in 2000 and is based in New York.

What believers are saying

  • Records keep falling: trading revenue hit $16.1 billion in the March 2026 quarter, more than double a year earlier.
  • Staff share record profits: disclosures in May 2026 showed 2025 pay more than doubled to $9.4 billion, averaging $2.7 million.
  • Pay starts high: October 2026 New York postings list a $300,000 base salary for new-grad engineers, traders and researchers.

What critics are saying

  • Big bets backfired: Jane Street lost about $15 billion in July 2026 and told staff it would take less risk.
  • India's manipulation case drags on: Jane Street's $567 million deposit stayed in escrow as hearings continued in October 2026.
  • AI bills are locked in: cloud deals with CoreWeave and Crusoe, from April and September 2026, total about $19 billion.

What makes Jane Street unique

  • It runs on a rare programming language: over 500 engineers write OCaml, and its codebase tops 30 million lines.
  • ETF issuers depend on it: Jane Street handled nearly a quarter of US-listed ETF share creations and redemptions in 2024.
  • It has never taken outside money: Jane Street's own capital grew to $45 billion in 2025.

Ripple Prime ventures into leveraged ETF financing market.

Ripple Prime ventures into leveraged ETF financing market. Oct 9, 2026 Reading time: 3 min Ripple Prime is expanding its services into the leveraged exchange-traded fund (ETF) financing market by offering total-return swaps to fund managers. This strategic move, building on the company's acquisition of Hidden Road, aims to capture recurring fees from financing charges in a segment traditionally dominated by banks, while also exposing Ripple to market risks associated with the underlying assets. The U.S. leveraged ETF market is substantial, comprising 593 funds with over $256 billion in assets, according to Morningstar Direct data cited in a Wall Street Journal report. Ripple Prime's entry into this market tests whether a firm originating from the crypto industry can successfully compete in a balance-sheet-intensive segment long held by traditional financial institutions. Strategic Expansion and Acquisition Following its acquisition of Hidden Road, which was completed in 2025, Ripple's prime brokerage business was established as Ripple Prime. The acquisition, announced in April 2025 for $1.25 billion, integrated Hidden Road's multi-asset capabilities in clearing, brokerage, and financing. Ripple Prime's services were recently highlighted with an announcement on Tuesday, October 6, detailing its brokerage, clearing, and financing offerings for Brevan Howard. Financing Mechanism and Revenue Potential Leveraged ETFs utilize derivatives, including total-return swaps, to magnify daily investment performance. Ripple Prime's offering of these swaps allows fund managers to finance their ETF positions. For example, the Tradr 2X Long SDNK Daily ETF pays Ripple a rate tied to the overnight bank funding rate plus four percentage points. As of Wednesday, October 7, this translated to approximately 8% of the fund's assets on an annualized basis, representing a source of recurring fees for Ripple Prime. Inherent Risks and Competitive Landscape However, this expansion also introduces market risks. Providing swap financing means Ripple Prime is exposed to the performance of the underlying assets financed by these swaps. While the move diversifies Ripple's business beyond traditional crypto services, it enters a competitive landscape where firms like Jane Street and Clear Street are also gaining traction. Implications for XRP The implications for XRP, the cryptocurrency associated with Ripple, appear limited. The news is viewed more as a long-term ecosystem development rather than a direct bullish catalyst for XRP's price. Unless Ripple Prime's expansion demonstrably creates measurable demand for XRP, increases its token utility, or triggers fresh buying interest, the immediate price impact on XRP is expected to be constrained. XRP is currently trading around $1.41, with little immediate sign of a positive market reaction to this news. Ripple's broader institutional strategy includes other markets such as custody and tokenization-related partnerships, exemplified by its work with Meritz Securities in South Korea. However, it is important to note that XRP does not underlie or collateralize these ETF swaps. Investors are advised to monitor XRP's trading volume, market sentiment, and price action around key resistance levels before interpreting this expansion as a direct driver of a rally. The success of Ripple Prime in this new venture hinges on its ability to navigate the complexities of balance-sheet-intensive financing and compete effectively against established players, while managing the inherent market risks associated with leveraged ETF financing. Broader context. Source materials place the factual news in this context: The U.S. leveraged ETF market has 593 funds and more than $256 billion in assets, including XRP, and Ripple Prime is making itself known in the news by entering the financing chain, providing total-return swaps to fund managers.

Hudson River Trading hired an ex-Goldman Sachs MD for its growing venture capital arm.

Hudson River Trading hired an ex-Goldman Sachs MD for its growing venture capital arm. 38 minutes ago Want to work as a venture capitalist but not at a venture capital firm? In the past your best bet might have been to work in Goldman Sachs' elite 'principal strategic investments (PSI) group' which, as of 2019, had invested $1.5bn in 76 companies. Today VC is a space that electronic trading firms are breaking into, and one of the biggest has hired an alum of that elite team in London to help it grow. Matt O'Neill has joined Hudson River Trading in London as an investor with HRT Ventures. HRT's website says that it invests in "early-stage ventures seeking to influence capital markets, trading, and the broader financial landscape." The firm has been making venture investments since at least 2021 when it invested in investment platform Republic. Other investments include AI infrastructure firm Eridu and sports trading platform Sporttrade. O'Neill was most recently at another trading firm, Flow Traders, where he was global head of business development. He spent three years there, working on relationship management with banks alongside the firm's VC initiatives. Before that, he spent 14 years at Goldman Sachs across two separate stints, where he was an MD and helped set up the PSI group's Hong Kong business. He also spent five years at Morgan Stanley's equities clearing business. Jane Street has been getting involved in private markets too, most notably by acquiring a stake in Anthropic from FTX following its bankruptcy. The firm has used these investments as an opportunity to "expand [into] businesses that are more public facing" according to Jane Street trader John Case in an interview with the Wall Street Journal in June. The prevalence of trading firms in the VC space may also be influenced by the various trading firm alums who have built successful startups. HRT's first intern class famously included several major players in the AI space today including Meta chief AI officer Alexandr Wang, Cognition CEO Scott Wu and Hyperliquid founder Jeff Yan. Jane Street hired Morgan Stanley's head of US rates sales.

Jane Street hired Morgan Stanley's head of US rates sales. 10 hours ago Proprietary trading firms like Jane Street don't manage money on behalf of clients but that doesn't mean there isn't a place for salespeople. The electronic trading firm has a sizeable sales and trading division which "work[s] with top institutional investors and asset managers;" it just hired a top rates salesperson from Morgan Stanley to bolster that team. Lindsay Bofman, Morgan Stanley's head of US rates sales, announced that she is joining Jane Street's sales team in New York. Finra's BrokerCheck tool suggests that her last day at Morgan Stanley was last Friday, and that she hasn't officially started work at Jane Street yet. Bofman spent eight years at Morgan Stanley, making MD in 2021. Before that, she spent a decade with Barclays, also focused on interest rates sales, having started her career with Lehman Brothers in the summer of 2008. She's not the first sales MD from a bank to join Jane Street. Niamh Taylor, a former MD in prime and alternatives sales for JPMorgan, joined Jane Street in London at the start of last year to work on 'bank and broker management.' She was also previously hedge fund Schonfeld's head of EMEA. What exactly will Bofman be selling at Jane Street? The firm did not respond to a request for comment. Jane Street does much more than just algorithmic trading these days; for example, the FT reported earlier this month that the firm is now the biggest player in the Asian equities block trading space. Finra reports show that 'Jane Street Capital LLC' provides services to multiple major banks; it offers "clearance, custody and other services" to Bank of America, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan while providing "prime brokerage services" to Wells Fargo, BNP Paribas and Cantor Fitzgerald. If you can find some good data, hedge funds will hire you.

If you can find some good data, hedge funds will hire you. 1 minute ago In March, we said that data strategists were hot. It's September and this is still so. Tudor Investment Corporation has just hired a new data strategist in London. He is Conor Taggart and he will seemingly be Tudor's data strategy lead. Tudor declined to comment. Taggart did not read our message. He appears to have arrived at Tudor recently. Data strategists source, evaluate, clean and render into usable formats, data that might be used for hedge funds to generate alpha. Good data is very valuable. Good data strategists are in demand. Before he worked for Tudor, Taggart worked for Eagle Alpha. Before he worked for Eagle Alpha, he worked for Millennium. Various other data strategists have also swapped jobs this year. Dan Ostermueller arrived at Jane Street in July after previously working for Citadel. Kevin Chiu arrived at Tower Research in August, after previously working for BlackRock. Adam Brown arrived at Jump Trading, also in August, after previously working for Morgan Stanley. Rokos hired Meredith Brown in New York as a macro data strategist in July. Quants can work in data strategy too. In Citadel's large data strategy team, for example, there are quant researchers who describe their function as, turning "noisy data into outputs that are intuitive, timely and directly usable."
