Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in Music or Music Education from an accredited university is required.
  • A valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or required training for the assigned subject and level is required.
  • Extensive content knowledge and operational knowledge of all aspects of an intermediate school music program are required.
  • Effective classroom management and teaching skills are required.
  • The ability to manage a budget and implement policies and procedures is required.
  • Knowledge of state policies and expectations pertaining to music and the ability to interpret data are required.
  • Strong communication, public relations, interpersonal, and collaborative skills are required.

  • Some instrumental music experience in band is preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Develop an annual calendar of required student performance opportunities and events, along with optional showcases or performances requested by the campus.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill District curriculum requirements and document preparation as required.
  • Conduct ongoing formal and informal assessments of student achievement.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula for students with special education needs according to Individual Education Plans.
  • Present subject matter according to Texas Education Agency guidelines, Board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Plan and use instructional strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect the learning styles and needs of assigned students.
  • Maintain educational records demonstrating student mastery and growth in curricular content.
  • Work with staff members to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to District requirements.
  • Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aides and volunteers as appropriate.
  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching and learning process.
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for students' physical, social, and emotional development.
  • Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.
  • Accompany and supervise students during on- and off-campus activities as appropriate.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Manage program funds within the allotted program budget.
  • Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  • Maintain a current inventory of fixed assets within the department.
  • Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Present information accurately and clearly using effective communication skills.
  • Conduct conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers as needed.
  • Work with campus and District colleagues to develop a positive school climate and promote collaborative teaming.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Comply with state, District, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file physical and computerized reports, records, and other professional-development documents as required.
  • Attend and actively participate in required District Professional Learning Communities, faculty meetings, and staff committees.
  • Maintain current knowledge of innovative and effective curriculum practices related to the content area.
  • Actively participate in official state organizations such as TMEA.
  • Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible behavior.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress and perform the physical activities required to set up and move content-area equipment and classroom supplies.
  • Travel districtwide and statewide and work some prolonged or irregular hours as required.
