About the job

Requirements
  • Proven end-to-end ownership of electromechanical hardware through concept, validation, production ramp, and field deployment in customer-facing or unattended systems.
  • Deep mechanism and structure design experience with actuators, transmissions, bearings, seals, and high-cycle moving assemblies, including demonstrated fatigue, wear, and environmental design competence.
  • Strong mechanical fundamentals, including hand calculations, finite element analysis grounding, kinematics, bolted joints, materials, tolerance analysis, and advanced computer-aided design skills managing system-level assemblies and drawing releases.
  • Demonstrated geometric dimensioning and tolerancing mastery, datum strategy, and practical tolerance-stack experience enabling repeatable, high-yield assembly.
  • Prototyping and test experience, including ability to define and run experiments and convert data into design decisions.
  • Track record resolving complex or intermittent hardware failures through disciplined root-cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
  • Experience integrating printed circuit board assemblies, wiring harnesses, motors, sensors, and embedded controls into mechanical designs.
  • Experience working directly with suppliers and manufacturing to ship high-volume, high-reliability hardware, including supplier qualification and on-site problem solving.
  • Must be comfortable with rapid escalations, supplier trips, test campaigns, and production-support nights in a high-responsibility, hands-on delivery cadence.
  • Must be comfortable with decisive engineering judgment, documenting assumptions and risks, data-driven decision-making, and methodical troubleshooting under field pressure.
Responsibilities
  • Own end-to-end mechanical scope for Dropbox assemblies, including requirements, architecture, detailed computer-aided design, drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and production release.
  • Define success metrics for systems, such as target field mean time between failures, service mean time to repair, production yield, or mean time between service actions, and drive design choices to meet them.
  • Translate customer workflows, hazard analyses, and droid interfaces into mechanical requirements and verified designs that minimize field interventions.
  • Lead trade studies and system-level decisions across safety, reliability, cycle time, environmental performance, serviceability, design for manufacturing, design for assembly, cost, and schedule; document chosen trade-offs and residual risks.
  • Create geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, datum strategy, alignment schemes, and tolerance stack-ups across complex electromechanical interfaces to ensure consistent assembly and alignment during high-volume builds.
  • Perform and apply first-principles analysis, hand calculations, kinematic analysis, fatigue and wear assessments, and finite element analysis to set margins and validate designs against defined targets.
  • Integrate actuators, transmissions, bearings, sensors, printed circuit board assemblies, connectors, harnesses, seals, and embedded controls into reliable assemblies; define and verify mechanical and electrical interfaces.
  • Partner with Electrical, Embedded Software, Systems, Test, Reliability, Manufacturing, Operations, and Safety to develop validation plans covering functional, lifetime, environmental, abuse, and fault-condition scenarios.
  • Prototype rapidly, run targeted experiments and test campaigns, and use data to down-select concepts and reduce technical risk; own test evidence and acceptance criteria.
  • Lead investigations of prototype, production, and field failures by containing failures, establishing root causes, implementing corrective actions, and tracking recurrence-reduction metrics.
  • Work directly with suppliers, new product introduction, and Manufacturing to implement design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly changes, improve yield, and qualify production processes; support supplier qualification and on-site manufacturing troubleshooting.
  • Use fleet telemetry, service records, and field observations to prioritize design changes that reduce failure rates and maintenance burden; report measurable improvement in uptime or service events.
  • Mentor other engineers, establish mechanical design best practices, and drive improvements in documentation quality and release discipline.

About the company

Zipline builds and operates autonomous drone delivery networks for retailers, restaurants and healthcare systems that need to move products without road traffic. Its electric aircraft carry food, prescriptions and other supplies from partner sites or distribution hubs to customers and health facilities. The company combines aircraft, charging equipment and delivery software with flight operations, so partners buy a logistics service rather than manage their own drones. Merchants use its ordering and tracking tools to reach customers, while governments and health systems contract for medical supply delivery. Zipline was founded in 2014 and has its headquarters in South San Francisco, California.

What believers are saying

  • Growth teams have fresh funding: Zipline raised over $600 million in January 2026 to expand delivery operations.
  • Consumer distribution is widening: Zipline announced Uber Eats integration in August 2026, with first deliveries planned later that year.
  • Operations extend beyond pilots: Zipline reported over 2.7 million completed deliveries across four continents in August 2026.

What critics are saying

  • New Texas scale is pending: Zipline's September 2026 five-metro proposal remains under FAA environmental review.
  • Bulk deliveries face a weight ceiling: Zipline's proposed Texas P2 aircraft have an eight-pound payload limit.
  • Field testing disrupts regular hours: Zipline's Esparto operator posting requires nights, weekends and occasional regional travel.

What makes Zipline unique

  • Its delivery pod steers itself: Zipline lowers an autonomous robot on a tether while the larger aircraft stays overhead.
  • Different docks share capacity: Zipline's P2 aircraft fly between docks and recharge before taking the next delivery.
  • Public health is a core customer: Zipline runs Rwanda's national blood-delivery network alongside its US consumer service.

Zipline secures 8-year Côte d'Ivoire deal to serve 12M people with drone delivery

US drone logistics company Zipline will expand operations in Côte d'Ivoire, building nine additional facilities to complement its existing site operational since 2023. The expansion aims to serve 12 million people, roughly a third of the Ivorian population, over the next eight years. During its three-year pilot programme, Zipline delivered nearly 4 million medical products — primarily vaccines and blood — to more than 200 healthcare centres in a region northwest of Abidjan. The Ivorian government will cover operating costs including pharmacy-grade warehousing, cold chain management, digital tracking, and delivery for eight years. Zipline expects the government to achieve a three-fold return on its investment, though the company declined to disclose the exact financial terms. The deal represents growing African government adoption of drone technology for delivering social services to hard-to-reach areas.
