Requirements
  • Current CNA certification from any state in the United States.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification from the American Heart Association and current basic life support certification, with demonstrated CPR competence.
  • At least two years of direct patient-care experience within the last three years.
  • At least one year of current experience, including work within the last six months, in a medical/surgical unit, long-term care or nursing-home setting, or inpatient psychiatric unit.
  • Knowledge and ability to use computers and other technology.
  • Ability to anticipate the needs of professional staff and work collaboratively.
  • Competency in basic nursing care and diagnostic support duties.
  • Proficiency in documentation and patient care planning.
  • Ability to provide physical and emotional support to patients.
  • Capability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle stressful situations.
  • Ability to complete and successfully pass any required government background check.
Responsibilities
  • Perform certified nursing assistant duties with minimal monitoring by a registered nurse while providing basic, appropriate, and effective interventions according to facility policies, safety standards, and procedures in medical/surgical and inpatient psychiatric units.
  • Refer deviations and problems not covered in the assignment to the professional registered nurse.
  • Provide personal nursing care, including feeding, walking, lifting, turning patients, and related hygiene care.
  • Care for patients using specialized equipment and receiving oxygen or suction therapy.
  • Supervise patients in self-care activities, including eating, dressing, and applying prosthetic devices and braces, to promote physical independence.
  • Instruct patients on preoperative and postoperative care using general information provided by a doctor or nurse.
  • Provide one-to-one care as a Patient Safety Partner on or off the unit as needed.
  • Conduct admission inventories and ongoing inventories as needed, including contraband searches and evaluations of the environment of care.
  • Recognize hazardous unit conditions; observe, manage, engage, and document disturbed behaviors; and report them to the registered nurse.
  • Work with COVID-19-positive patients and patients under investigation for COVID-19.
  • Take, record, and report deviations in vital signs and changes in patient condition.
  • Assist doctors with diagnostic examinations and emergency procedures, including lumbar punctures, liver biopsies, bone marrow examinations, and emergency interventions.
  • Assemble necessary equipment and position patients for procedures.
  • Collect, label, and transport specimens to the laboratory.
  • Check patients during and after procedures for changes in condition.
  • Escort and transport patients to and from diagnostic studies, appointments, and procedures.
  • Perform electrocardiograms as requested.
  • Perform treatment procedures, including changing simple dressings.
  • Care for patients with infections, communicable diseases, and infection-isolation requirements.
  • Care for patients receiving oxygen through a cannula, mask, or venturi mask, as well as patients receiving chest therapy and postural drainage.
  • Care for patients with condom catheters and indwelling Foley catheters.
  • Administer basic life-support measures.
  • Obtain and record temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respirations, pulse oximetry, height, weight, intake and output, and blood sugar according to provider orders, and immediately report abnormalities to the registered nurse.
  • Provide patient information verbally to the nurse for inclusion in nursing care plans.
  • Document vital signs and patient-condition information in the patient chart.
  • Assist with completing patient admission histories.
  • Clean and care for equipment used in oxygen and suction therapy and frame beds, and report equipment needing repair.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
