  • A bachelor's degree is required.
  • Graduation from an ACLP-endorsed child life academic program or completion of the ACLP-required coursework is required.
  • ACLP-CCLS (Certified Child Life Specialist) certification is required upon hire.
  • Basic Life Support certification issued by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association is required within 30 days of hire.
  • Membership in the Association of Child Life Professionals is required.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office, EMR/Epic, and/or other computer systems is required.
  • A current Oklahoma State driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the employer's insurance carrier are required because the role requires operating an employer-owned or personal vehicle.
Responsibilities
  • Provide developmentally appropriate preparation, support, therapeutic interventions, medical play, advocacy, and emotional support to promote positive coping during healthcare experiences and reduce stress, anxiety, and the negative impact of trauma, hospitalization, and illness.
  • Participate in, document, and communicate with other healthcare team members about children's and families' developmental and psychosocial needs in the hospital setting.
  • Adhere to National Patient Safety Goals appropriate to the level of patient contact required by the position.
  • Provide developmentally appropriate education to patients and families about healthcare experiences.
  • Provide developmentally appropriate procedural preparation and support to patients and families.
  • Provide developmentally appropriate therapeutic and medical play interventions to help patients and families cope with illness and hospitalization.
  • Provide goal-oriented, individualized therapeutic interventions to patients and families.
  • Use play-based interventions with medical puppets or dolls to provide developmentally appropriate education to patients and families.
  • Support patients and families experiencing grief and bereavement.
  • Normalize the environment to support developmental milestones and promote positive coping.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to identify and manage patients' and families' emotional safety and developmental needs.
  • Document and maintain updated patient information about child life services provided.
  • Use the Facility Dog to support positive coping and create an environment conducive to patients' and families' therapeutic needs and medical goals during hospitalization.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to identify therapeutic or medical goals for patient care involving the Child Life Specialist Dog Handler and Facility Dog.
  • Assess whether patients and families are appropriate and willing to participate in Facility Dog interactions based on patient treatment goals.
  • Accurately document Facility Dog interactions and program validity in the patient's medical chart.
  • Facilitate animal care and activities in accordance with cleanliness and infection-prevention policies and procedures.
  • Assess the Facility Dog's needs throughout the work shift to provide adequate rest and downtime.
  • Maintain dog-handling requirements set by the placement facility dog organization and INTEGRIS Health policies, including weight management, veterinary care, home environment, grooming, recurrent teaching, and reporting.
