Requirements
- Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification Centers, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant is required, for the physician assistant pathway.
- Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant approved physician assistant training program is required.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine, for the physician assistant pathway.
- Proficiency with computers.
- Ability to perform heavy physical work, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning, standing, walking, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- Ability to work protracted or irregular hours and around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment, and with hands in water.
Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality, patient-centered care as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Assess, diagnose, treat, and manage patients within the scope of practice and area of specialty.
- Coordinate and clinically manage comprehensive preoperative patient care, including biological, social, and psychological assessments.
- Coordinate the involvement of medical and surgical specialty teams to develop comprehensive patient optimization plans.
- Review plans of care with clinical team members and participate in directing that care.
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and coordinate surgical planning as applicable.
- Participate in the education of residents and medical and nursing students.
- Provide consultation services for comprehensive and individualized care of preoperative patients and their families.
- Complete optimization evaluations and pre-procedure or pre-surgical evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations when appropriate, in collaboration with preoperative faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic, surgical, and hospital staff about abnormal evaluation findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Coordinate services and tests before surgery to optimize patient outcomes during the perioperative phase of care.
- Develop individualized preoperative plans of care that include teaching, surgical and medical planning, and referrals to other healthcare-team members.
- Care for patients across the age continuum within the scope of education and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex preoperative situations and initiate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate preoperative patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting as applicable.
- Assist with collection of outcome measures as applicable.
- Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage individual patient and family needs.
- Use patient-care equipment safely.
- Base clinical decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, expected outcomes, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching strategies.
- Promote learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Maintain the required knowledge base and complete identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for preoperative patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in each patient’s medical record according to approved hospital and University Health Associates policies and documentation standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to improve patient outcomes through improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in preoperative practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate problem-solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice an expanded role in delivering care to preoperative patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for assigned committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret preoperative data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the principal investigator.
- Assist preoperative faculty, administrators, and directors with collecting outcome measures.
Desired Qualifications
- Preoperative or acute-care experience is preferred.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
- Acute Care Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Family Nurse Practitioners will be considered.
- A Master’s Degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
