Wisk’s internship experience is a 12 week, hands-on program. Our goal for our internship program is to see what it’s like to be a full time Wisk employee and complete meaningful work.
We are looking for a Battery Cell Engineer to join our team for summer 2025. The goal of a Battery Cell Engineer at Wisk is to ensure that Battery Cells are performance tested, characterized and qualified for use on flight test aircraft. You will be part of the Energy Storage & Power System Integrated Product Team (ESPS IPT) team that is responsible for cell selection, analysis and testing.
Responsibilities:
- As part of the ESPS organization, and deployed in the Cell development group, you will act as a Cell Engineering Intern for a novel type of aircraft development targeting the autonomous UAM market
- Work in a multidisciplinary group to drive design of battery cells of high voltage Battery Packs
- Perform cell electrochemical performance, environmental and safety testing under the supervision of senior cell development engineers
- Perform tear-down of the cells, prepare samples, and carry out reference electrode testing
- Develop test protocols and perform testing to obtain calibrations for fast charging algorithms
- Perform analysis and modeling using software tools (GT-Autolion, Pybamm, Comsol, Juliasim etc..) to benchmark battery cells and packs
- Support cycling tests for battery pack and module under the supervision of system testing team
- Post process and report analysis results to support design decisions
- Help design, build and perform experiments of real aircraft systems to calibrate and validate simulations
- Support prototype builds and technology maturation testing to ensure battery packs meet functional requirements.
- You will be responsible for providing analytical support for preliminary & detailed design, through development, validation, certification and manufacturing & operational service
Requirements:
- Must be currently pursuing a bachelors, masters or PhD degree with an expected graduation date between December 2025 and June 2027, with a focus on Chemical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Aeronautical Engineering (or equivalent)
- You have experience in operating test-stands (Arbin, Maccor or Neware) for batteries or fuel cells
- You have hands-on experience in building coin cells, reference electrode cells through tear-downs of battery cells
- You have hands-on experience building prototypes, setting up and running tests. Preference will be given for experience with EVs, batteries, thermal and fluid systems, power electronics or other high-voltage applications.
- You have applied knowledge of multiphysics engineering analysis and simulation tools for developing system models in 1D (Matlab/Simulink, GT-suite, Amesim, COMSOL, Pybamm etc..) and
- You have strong documentation skills and can write detailed test and analysis technical reports.
Hourly rate will be $25 USD an hour.
This internship role will be based at Wisk’s office in Fremont, California and relocation or housing will not be provided.
