About the Company

TIAA

Sells retirement annuities to nonprofit workers

TIAA runs workplace retirement plans and sells annuities to people who work for colleges, hospitals, research institutions, cultural groups and government agencies. Its flagship TIAA Traditional annuity guarantees a minimum return and has paid additional interest above that floor every year since 1948, turning savings into income for life. Employers sponsor the plans and workers contribute from each paycheck, while TIAA earns investment spread and fees on the money it manages, partly through Nuveen, its asset management arm. Andrew Carnegie founded TIAA in 1918 to fund pensions for college professors, and the organization is headquartered in New York City.
