Requirements
  • Must possess current radiographer licensure as required by the state where services are provided: Maryland radiographer licensure through the Maryland Board of Physicians, Ohio radiographer licensure through the Ohio Board of Radiology, no state license required in Pennsylvania, or radiography licensure through the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board.
  • Must be registered in Radiography by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Must be registered in Mammography with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Must obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Must complete state and, if applicable, federal criminal background checks as required for regulated areas.
  • Must be able to differentiate various shades of gray on a black-and-white television monitor or photograph.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for up to 12 hours a day.
  • Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 10 pounds.
  • Must be able to carry items weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in an environment with occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, airborne particles, body fluids, toxic or caustic chemicals, and electrical-shock risks.
  • Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple situations simultaneously.
  • Must be able to interact positively with patients, families, and members of the healthcare team.
Responsibilities
  • Plans imaging procedures based on patient needs, including all examinations within the job scope.
  • Continually develops skills and competency in all examinations within the job scope defined by leadership.
  • Maintains expertise in anatomy, physiology, and pathology related to imaging to optimize procedures and ensure patient care and safety.
  • Positions and compresses patients accurately and fully images all breast tissue.
  • Minimizes radiation exposure to patients and staff by using shielding and correctly selecting exposure factors.
  • Evaluates images for protocol compliance, image density, contrast, detail, positioning, compression, and absence of artifacts, and ensures proper patient identification appears on every image.
  • Educates patients about mammographic procedures by explaining the procedure and answering questions.
  • Documents imaging activities accurately and consistently in accordance with American College of Radiology and federal mandates.
  • Participates in problem solving, crisis management, and systems implementation with physicians, nursing personnel, technical personnel, and support personnel throughout the hospital.
  • Performs mammographic imaging quality-control tests in accordance with manufacturer requirements and documents them in the Mammography Quality Control Track module.
  • Applies imaging techniques, patient-care practices, and guest-relations behaviors in accordance with the ARRT Code of Ethics, administrative policies and procedures, Radiology Department policies, Mammography regulations, state and federal regulations, and The Joint Commission guidelines.
  • Reports equipment failures immediately upon identification.
  • Maintains a clean, neat, and well-stocked procedure area.
  • Prepares contrast agents, specific pharmaceuticals, and sterile trays and devices for invasive mammographic procedures.
  • Maintains Mammography Quality Standards Act compliance.
