Requirements
  • Hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Registered Nurse qualification with recent maternal/infant, community, or public health experience.
  • Have experience in patient counseling and education and recent perinatal nursing.
  • Have prior experience and training in one or more areas of health education.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification within 90 days of hire and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Have a valid Washington State driver's license and own or have access to an insured vehicle.
  • Be able to provide age-appropriate care and demonstrate knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan.
  • Be able to document all nursing visits in the client electronic health record.
  • Be able and willing to work with translators if not bilingual in Spanish.
  • Maintain client confidentiality and professional boundaries, including in clients' homes.
  • Be available via pager for urgent needs and attend monthly provider and quarterly Community First Steps meetings.
  • Be able to work off site for home visits and maintain a flexible schedule, including some evenings or weekends.
  • Meet the stated employee health screening, influenza vaccination, background, and substance-misuse requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate prenatal and postnatal risk assessment, teaching, referrals, and care for Sea Mar obstetric and eligible First Steps clients.
  • Assess clients and families' understanding of prenatal and postnatal care and provide education accordingly.
  • Teach fetal development, normal pregnancy changes, warning signs, medical care, sexuality and reproductive health, nutrition, elimination, activity and exercise, sleep and rest, self-perception, relationships, coping and stress, values and beliefs, family planning, breastfeeding, and childbirth preparation.
  • Initiate prenatal contact, complete thorough nursing assessments, and make referrals to nutrition, social work, mental health, community service agencies, and medical providers as needed.
  • Continue assessments, health messages, and education throughout pregnancy, with at least one face-to-face visit each trimester and postpartum.
  • Perform early postpartum home or office visits.
  • Triage prenatal and postnatal needs, schedule visits, and coordinate with Sea Mar MSS team members and non-Sea Mar providers as needed.
  • Participate in community-wide efforts and coalitions to improve comprehensive interdisciplinary care for prenatal and postnatal clients.
  • Consult and coordinate client care regularly and as needed with other professionals using a team approach.
  • Attend monthly provider meetings and quarterly Community First Steps meetings.
  • Provide care through home visits and shared office work with the MSS team.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bilingual Spanish/English and bicultural background.
  • Experience in patient counseling and education.
  • Lactation consultation experience and training.
  • Certified Childbirth Educator training or certification.
