Job Description

Salary Range: $43.53 - $61.18 (Clinical Educator/Faciltator)

Salary Range: $41.15 - $58.98 (Registered Nurse)

Reporting jointly to the Manager, Professional Practice and the Manager, Medical Day Care, the Clinical Educator/Facilitator (CEF) and Registered Nurse serves as both a clinical educator and Registered Nurse.

In the educator component of the role, the incumbent provides leadership in professional practice, staff development, competency assessment, orientation, continuing education, quality improvement, and evidence-informed practice. Working collaboratively with leaders and interdisciplinary teams, the CEF promotes a learning culture that supports excellence in clinical practice and optimal patient outcomes.

In the clinical component of the role, the Registered Nurse provides direct patient care within Medical Day Care and oncology services, including the administration of chemotherapy, biotherapy and supportive therapies, comprehensive patient assessment, vascular access management, and consultation related to intravenous therapy and central venous access devices.

The successful candidate demonstrates advanced oncology knowledge, strong leadership abilities, exceptional communication skills, and a commitment to continuous learning, quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence-informed practice.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Educator/Facilitator Responsibilities (50%)

Education:

• Education and staff development, particularly in relation to nurses
• Assess learning needs and styles
• Design and deliver education that is tailored to specific needs of individual/unit/program
• Develop curricula using contemporary educational theories, principles, and models
• Incorporates best evidence and relevant research findings into content and delivery methods
• Incorporates best practices in education (e.g. principles of adult learning, domains of learning)
• Incorporates inter-professional core competencies where applicable
• Monitors and evaluates education and mastery of nursing learners-  revises education and learning activities to meet emerging needs
• Provides timely feedback to staff on their learning and application to their practice competence including following up with practice related report links.
• Demonstrates professionalism including legal, ethical and professional values as a basis for developing nursing standards, guidelines, policies, procedures and decision making

Consultation/Collaboration:

• Engages and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to identify and support educational, clinical practice, and corporate initiatives
• Engages members of the intra- and inter-professional team, management team and across hospital departments in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating educational, clinical practice, and Corporate initiatives
• Actively participates in the Clinical Educator/Facilitator team and works collaboratively with other CEF colleagues
• Collaborates with the hospital’s Interprofessional Education Coordinator to facilitate nursing student placements and adherence to learning management system requirements
• Collaborates with Clinical Manager(s) in interviewing, hiring and contributing to the evaluation of nurses
• Participates in hospital and corporate committees and other groups to represent the CEF perspective and serves as a bridge to the unit/program and Clinical Educator/Facilitator team by disseminating committee information and decisions

Research and Quality Improvement:

• Supports and participates in the implementation of evidence based practice (best practice guidelines and other forms of evidence) and quality improvement initiatives on unit/in programs including Corporate initiatives
• Leads, supports, and participates in programmatic and unit/clinic based quality improvement initiatives including assessment of clinical supplies, recalls and shortages.  
• Utilizes critical inquiry and the ability to participate in research, translate knowledge, and utilize findings to identify and address educational and practice-based challenges
• Demonstrates the key skills, behaviours, abilities, and knowledge required to make meaningful health system change, integrate actions dedicated to patient, family, and community care, and build healthy workplaces
• Embodies the LEADS in a Caring Environment capabilities to develop and maintain initiatives and programmes to shape the future of health profession education and clinical practice

Clinical Practice Responsibilities (50%)

• Provide direct nursing care to oncology, and palliative patients.
• Administer chemotherapy, biotherapy, blood products and supportive therapies.
• Complete comprehensive patient assessments and ongoing monitoring.
• Develop and maintain advanced competencies in PICC and Midline insertion and management.
• Support organizational vascular access services.
• Provide consultation regarding IV therapy, CVADs and related products and procedures.
• Participate in emergency response and management of oncologic emergencies.
• Maintain specialty knowledge and clinical competence in oncology nursing practice.

Qualifications:

• Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses in Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse in good standing required
• Baccalaureate in Nursing with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in Oncology Nursing

• Masters degree in Nursing or related health care field, or evidence of working towards is required
• Completion of the deSouza Provincial Standardized Chemotherapy/Biotherapy course required
• Canadian Nurses Association CON (c) certification or completion within three (3) years required
• Recent formal education and experience in adult education within the past 2 years required
• Must have completion of the palliative care, oncology course or evidence of continuous education and course work in oncology and/or palliative care
• Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning related to oncology/palliative/hematology nursing is required
• Knowledge, experience and competence in the management of oncologic and hematologic and other end stage disease processes required
• Knowledge, experience, and competence in managing complex pain and symptoms related to oncologic and non-oncologic disease processes and palliation required
• Must demonstrate psychosocial skills and relevant experience with offering supportive emotional care to the palliative patient and their family/significant others from all cultural backgrounds
• Essential to have knowledge at an advanced level of potential oncologic emergencies that can arise in this patient population and the confidence to handle these emergencies as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Formal teaching preparation as an educator or evidence of working towards is required
• Must also demonstrate familiarity with blood products and protocols used in the treatment of oncology and palliative care patients, including the indication and use of special filters and fluids for transfusions
• Understanding and commitment to meeting health and safety recommendations as recommended by NIOSH, CCO, CANO and other regulatory organizations
• Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis is required
• Demonstrated advanced critical thinking, process improvement/redesign, and problem solving skills
• Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to engage teams
• Professional practice experience in program planning, curriculum design, learning technologies, and facilitation skills within the past 2 years required

• Quality improvement and change management experience
• Curriculum development and program evaluation
• Evidence-informed practice leadership
• Experience facilitating interprofessional learning

• Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of Cambridge Memorial Hospital
• Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
• Must have an excellent attendance record
• Knowledge of Oracle Health Information System and Meditech
