Requirements
  • Experience in Health Education or related field.
  • Completion or certification in a course related specialty or Active Nursing Student enrolled in a nursing program.
  • 1 year related teaching experience in Childbirth Education and/or Birth or Postpartum Doula Certification with a strong history of presentation in education or active nursing student enrolled in an ongoing education program that includes education and presentation experience
  • Current Certification as a Childbirth Educator/Doula/Medical professional with a documented teaching history and strong knowledge of newborn care, childbirth and postpartum recovery
  • Ability to lift and push up to 25 lbs.
  • On occasion, set up and break down rooms for classes including moving tables and chairs
  • Ability to set up and professionals present a light continental breakfast for the GBMC Weekender and Born Free classes with the use of gloves when handling food preparation
  • Works in classroom or office with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, or temperature
  • Ability to stand and walk up to eighty percent of work time in conducting classes
  • Knowledge of maternity principles and care
  • Working knowledge of audiovisual equipment
  • Skill in developing sound educational programs
  • Ability to effectively communicate about controversial issues with maternity care clients and health care providers
  • Ability to analyze and assess client learning needs in large group and individual situations and adapt course objectives, teaching strategies and methodologies accordingly

  • Conducts educational programs by assessing learning needs, facilitating classes, identifying program strengths and weaknesses, and evaluating program effectiveness.
  • Troubleshoots issues that develop prior to, during, or after classes.
  • Communicates with other health professionals regarding health care of class participants. Reviews course content annually.
  • Assists in development and selection of audio-visual aids appropriate to courses and has all changes approved in writing by manager prior to teaching.
  • Serves as a resource person to nursing and to consumers of maternity services. Provides educational opportunities for nursing students.
  • Serves as a liaison between the community, the consumer, the program, and the hospital.
  • Applies principles of adult / child learning as indicated.
  • Able to teach multiple of class topics offered by the department.
  • Responds positively to feedback and initiates changes / responses as needed.
  • Able to teach any class without the need for audio visual equipment.
  • Maintains at all times control of the class (refraining from personal stories and client stories that could monopolize the class time).
  • Begins and ends class on time respecting the patients need for structure and timeliness and the departments need to stay within the designated teaching time.
  • Must be able to cross cover in the capacity of a Birth or Postpartum Doula and meet the needs of the Birth or Postpartum Doula requirements
