About the job

Requirements
  • Have 5–8 years of experience in a customer-facing solution delivery, consulting, or forward-deployed role, such as Forward Deployed Engineer, Engagement Manager, Solutions Architect with delivery scope, strategic-level Technical Account Manager, Customer Engineering Lead, or Implementation Lead.
  • Demonstrate an operationally rigorous track record of delivering customer outcomes, not merely running programs.
  • Have personally owned an enterprise customer's outcome end-to-end.
  • Communicate precisely with engineers, vice presidents, and C-suite executives, adapting register to the audience.
  • Have translated customer requirements into buildable engineering work and engineering trade-offs into actionable customer decisions.
  • Take ownership of problems through resolution, regardless of formal job boundaries.
  • Combine consulting engagement management capabilities—including client management, structured thinking, executive presence, and written clarity—with the initiative to build playbooks rather than follow existing ones.
  • Have worked inside a startup or scale-up engineering organization, from Series A through D.
  • Be technically fluent enough to read architecture documentation, ask relevant questions, and participate directly in engineering discussions.
  • Have used modern program tools, specifically Linear and Notion, or have migrated to them from Jira, Asana, or Confluence and can explain the rationale.
  • Produce clear written communication, including decision-driving status updates, useful postmortems, and persuasive memos.
  • Show high agency by closing loops, creating playbooks without waiting for direction, and constructively challenging the company when warranted.
Responsibilities
  • Own delivery outcomes for a portfolio of 2–4 strategic NX1 accounts, each with $5–10M in delivery or managed-services revenue.
  • Manage gross margin and unit economics across the portfolio, including cost to serve, scope discipline, hero-engineer attrition risk, and custom work that does not generalize.
  • Own the accounts' P&L, drive delivery and gross-margin outcomes, and surface risks early.
  • Own customer-side executive relationships with leaders such as the VP of Data, CDO, or CTO.
  • Shape renewal and expansion strategy in partnership with the CRO without carrying quota.
  • Establish the delivery program at the start of each engagement, including its roadmap, milestones, dependencies, governance, and communication cadence.
  • Run weekly operating rhythms, including internal stand-ups, customer syncs, executive readouts, and escalation reviews, and create supporting artifacts grounded in delivery realities.
  • Own each engagement's documentation, including the program plan, decision log, RAID register, executive status, runbooks, and customer-facing roadmap.
  • Design how Linear and Notion are used across the portfolio.
  • Translate customer business problems and requirements to NX1's engineering organization, and communicate engineering trade-offs back to customers accurately.
  • Develop requirements collaboratively with customers through discussion, questions, and constructive pushback.
  • Bring in Solution Architects when deeper architecture expertise is needed and FDEs or engineers when work needs to be built.
  • Manage technical commitments by distinguishing in-scope work, roadmap requests, and one-off custom builds the engagement cannot absorb.
  • Read architecture documentation, ask incisive questions, and prepare concise summaries for customer CTOs and engineering teams to scope work.
  • Define each customer's written success criteria within the first 60 days of an engagement and instrument them.
  • Develop customer-health signals that identify risks early using usage trajectory, executive sentiment, milestone slippage, support-ticket patterns, and roadmap-dependency drift.
  • Run quarterly business reviews for customer executive teams.
  • Convert customer pain into product-roadmap input and close the loop when the input is implemented.
  • Partner with the CRO on expansion discussions, contributing technical credibility and customer context.
  • Manage engagement cost to serve and distinguish managed-service scope from paid one-off work and roadmap requests.
  • Identify early churn signals and escalate them before they develop into larger risks.
  • Write the substance of renewal narratives, documenting delivered outcomes, customer changes, and next steps.
  • Define the NX1 engagement playbook as a builder of the function.
  • Codify effective practices across the portfolio into reusable artifacts for future FDEM hires.
  • Influence the operating model and handoffs among Forward Engineering, the MSO function, and Sales.
Desired Qualifications
  • A background in data, cloud, or platform infrastructure is strongly preferred.
  • Experience at Palantir in FDE, Anthropic or OpenAI in FDE or Solutions, Databricks in Field Engineering or Customer Engineering, Stripe in Implementation or Solutions, Ramp or Mercury in Solutions, Scale AI in FDE, or a comparable forward-deployed environment.
  • Direct gross-margin or P&L responsibility for accounts, beyond milestone delivery.
  • An engineering background, such as a CS degree, engineering individual-contributor role, or credible technical foundation developed on the job.
  • Experience writing a playbook rather than only executing someone else's.
