Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • Knowledge of the nutritional values of foods used in menu substitutions.
  • Familiarity with United States Department of Agriculture meal patterns.
  • Ability to relate to children and adults in a positive manner.
  • Ability to lift at least 35 pounds without assistance and 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing 30 pounds unassisted and 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to clean and maintain kitchen equipment and the center.
  • Ability to take precautions to protect the health and safety of children, parents, and staff due to potential exposure to illness or contagious conditions.
  • Ability to work in a busy and occasionally noisy environment with multiple activities occurring simultaneously.
  • Ability to climb, lift, balance, walk, stoop, and handle materials.
  • Ability to learn and use technology.
  • Ability to pass a hearing test.
  • Ability to visually observe children from all areas of the classroom and playground from at least 20 feet away.
  • A background check, fingerprinting, and drug test are required before the hire date.
  • Comfort handling multiple situations simultaneously and accidents or emergencies at any time.
Responsibilities
  • Assist the Food Service Manager with meal preparation, record keeping, and sanitation.
  • Work with the Food Service Manager to prepare nutritious breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack.
  • Assist with preparing at least one baked snack each week.
  • Assist with preparing at least one fresh fruit or vegetable each day.
  • Follow menus and production records unless an approved substitution is made.
  • Follow the planned menu cycle.
  • Transport meals to other centers when needed.
  • Assist with preparing foods that meet special dietary requirements.
  • Maintain a running list of foods and supplies needed.
  • Assist with placing orders from approved vendors.
  • Assist with checking food and supply delivery invoices and restocking shelves.
  • Assist with or complete inventory at the end of each menu cycle.
  • Maintain production records and record the number of meals served after each meal service.
  • Post the current menu attractively.
  • Assist with posting information regarding special diets and allergies.
  • Follow the Child and Adult Care Food Program meal pattern chart for food components and age-appropriate portion sizes.
  • Observe meals served in each class and complete a quarterly Atmosphere and Environment Observation.
  • Assist with completing the monthly kitchen observation and safety checklist.
  • Assist with maintaining inventory for kitchen equipment and supplies.
  • Sweep and clean kitchen floors as needed.
  • Clean the kitchen at the end of each day.
  • Keep the pantry clean and organized at all times.
  • Wash, air-dry, and store dishes in the appropriate place each day.
  • Wear a clean and appropriate uniform, head covering, and shoes.
  • Clean the milk dispenser, refrigerator, freezer, and ice machines as needed.
  • Sanitize all food preparation areas and utensils after each use.
  • Wear a back brace when lifting.
  • Store food off the floor and away from chemicals.
  • Keep cabinets and drawers orderly.
  • Check each food delivery for shortages, improper substitutions, and damage before accepting it.
  • Label and properly store all food items.
  • Date-label and properly store refrigerated foods in airtight containers.
  • Assist with cooking projects and nutritional education in the classroom.
  • Cooperate in preparing birthday cakes and other cooking projects.
  • Prepare refreshments for meetings and special events.
  • Attend all staff meetings.
  • Attend parent meetings when requested.
  • Contribute nutritional information to the newsletter quarterly.
  • Work with children with special needs and their families.
  • Maintain good attendance and report to the kitchen according to schedule.
  • Share new recipes with other Food Service Managers.
  • Apply knowledge gained from food service training and courses.
  • Attend food shows.
  • Follow center rules regarding breaks and telephone use.
  • Report to the Center Director before the workday begins when planning to be absent.
  • Support the center's code of ethical conduct regarding confidentiality for children, families, and staff.
  • Demonstrate understanding of Child and Adult Care Food Program regulations, licensing requirements, and Head Start Program Performance Standards.
