Requirements
  • A post-secondary diploma or degree in the Social Services field, such as Child and Youth Worker or Youth Justice.
  • Strong knowledge of computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Valid First Aid and CPI certifications.
  • At least one year of recent experience providing services or programs for males aged 12–17 in detention or custody under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
  • At least one year of recent experience working with youth involved in the criminal system, including conflict management, individualized support, and supervision of community or recreational outings.
  • At least one year of recent experience with group facilitation, program modification and evaluation, crisis intervention or management, client intake, assessment, counselling, and conflict resolution.
  • Working knowledge of the Social and Criminal Justice systems and internal and external community resources.
  • Knowledge of relevant counselling practices and effective counselling skills.
  • Proficiency using computers and computer systems, including Microsoft Word Suite.
  • Skills in counselling, teaching, group and individual facilitation, communication, conflict resolution, mathematics, and administrative tasks.
  • Assessment skills for service delivery and daily operational or programming issues, including determining suitability and risk.
  • Program planning skills to implement, evaluate, and modify programs.
  • Effective crisis intervention skills and the ability to work under pressure during situations involving volatile behavior.
  • Written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to adjust communication to different audiences.
  • Ability to handle confidential materials according to organizational policies, procedures, and legal standards.
  • Ability to use conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and safe-management tools and techniques when dealing with challenging behavior and resolving issues.
  • Ability to comply with organizational policies and procedures, including workplace human rights, code of conduct, AODA Customer Service Standards, and the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Ability to use Outlook Calendar to organize and coordinate activities.
  • Valid driver's license or G1 license, with commitment to obtaining a G2 or full G license within two years.
  • Satisfactory professional references, background checks, and proof of education are required for employment.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direction and advice to clients regarding daily living activities, including hygiene, budgeting, cooking and meal preparation, nutrition, social skills, community participation, and achieving goals.
  • Provide counselling and support to clients and their families, including assistance with individual goals, programming, and case management.
  • Oversee and supervise community and recreational outings for individuals or groups of clients.
  • Liaise with community partners and referral sources.
  • Escort youth to appointments using a house vehicle and public transit.
  • Provide clerical, reception, and administrative support to the program.
  • Foster a safe and healthy work environment for residents and staff in accordance with policies, procedures, and legislation.
  • Respond to crisis situations that may involve volatile behavior.
  • Work days, afternoons or evenings, wake overnights, weekdays, weekends, and additional shifts as required to provide seven-day, 24-hour coverage.
  • Travel to other locations or communities as required by programming.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system, including the Youth Criminal Justice Act and Child and Family Services Act, and knowledge of social service agencies.
  • Ability to communicate in French verbally and in writing.
