Requirements
  • A bachelor's or advanced degree in mechanical, aerospace, or a related engineering discipline is required.
  • At least 1 year of mechanism, actuator, or precision mechanical design experience is required; internship and academic experience are applicable.
  • Proficiency with 3D computer-aided design and the ability to produce detailed engineering drawings with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing are required.
  • The candidate must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations for export-regulated work.
Responsibilities
  • Own rotary actuator designs from concept through detailed design, analysis, build, test, and flight, including solar array drive assemblies, deployment hinges, dampers, latches, and gimbals.
  • Select and integrate motors, gearheads, bearings, slip rings, and position sensors; size drivetrains for required torque, speed, lifetime, and backlash.
  • Perform mechanism analysis covering torque margin, friction budgets, stiffness, backlash, jitter, and life, and verify performance against requirements through hand calculations and finite element analysis.
  • Specify lubrication, materials, and surface treatments suited to vacuum, thermal cycling, and radiation, and manage tribology and wear over mission life.
  • Design and execute mechanism qualification and acceptance testing, including functional, life, vibration, shock, thermal-vacuum, and torque-margin testing.
  • Partner with electrical, controls, and avionics teams on motor drive electronics, feedback sensing, and closed-loop actuator control.
  • Work with manufacturing to design for assembly, alignment, and rate production of precision rotating hardware.
  • Simplify mechanisms, reduce part count, and eliminate overhead that does not add value.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Hands-on experience designing rotary mechanisms such as actuators, gearboxes, gimbals, hinges, or drive assemblies for flight or other high-reliability applications.
  • Experience selecting and integrating brushless direct-current motors, harmonic drives, planetary gearheads, and precision bearings.
  • Familiarity with space-rated tribology, including dry-film and wet lubricants, bearing preload, and life testing under vacuum and thermal cycling.
  • Experience with slip rings, twist capsules, or other rotary power and signal transfer devices.
  • Working knowledge of motor drive electronics, encoders/resolvers, and closed-loop position or velocity control.
  • Experience executing mechanism qualification campaigns, including life, thermal-vacuum, vibration, and shock testing, and correlating results to analysis.
  • Familiarity with aerospace mechanism standards and practices, including NASA-STD-5017 and AIAA mechanisms guidance.
  • Exposure to solar array deployment systems, solar array drive assemblies, antenna pointing mechanisms, or similar spacecraft mechanisms.
  • Exposure to aerospace, space, or other high-reliability hardware environments.

Starpath Robotics designs and builds robotic factories that can operate on the Moon and Mars to mine local resources, refine them into rocket propellant, and distribute it as a space refueling infrastructure. Its product works by deploying autonomous or remotely operated factory units that extract water ice, process it into propellant, and supply rockets and landers with fuel, enabling in-situ production of propellant for deep-space missions. Unlike others that may offer individual components, Starpath aims to provide a full-stack hardware system for ISRU-based propellant production and distribution as a service, targeting both private space companies and government agencies. The company’s goal is to establish a space refueling station that significantly lowers the cost of moving payloads in deep space by eliminating the need to launch heavy fuel from Earth, supporting the vision of long-term off-world colonies and multi-planet humanity.

Starpath Robotics raises $12M seed funding
