  • High school diploma or GED and an Associate’s degree in birth-through-kindergarten, child development, early childhood education, or a related early childhood education field, or a Child Development Associate credential; candidates working toward the Associate’s degree or credential must complete at least six documented semester hours per year.
  • Alternatively, meet the employment requirements outlined by the Every Student Succeeds Act and have six documented semester hours of early childhood education coursework or two years of work experience in an early childhood setting.
  • Experience working with or assisting individuals with special needs.
  • Hold and maintain Crisis Prevention and Intervention certification, with training provided by the school system if needed.
  • Ability to use computers, scanners, copiers, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and perform the physical requirements of medium work, including occasionally exerting up to 50 pounds of force and frequently exerting up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work in classroom and office environments and have direct contact with school staff, students, parents, and the community.
Responsibilities
  • Support teachers in coordinating instructional programs for special education students, including implementing students’ Individualized Education Plans, while maintaining an encouraging, caring, safe, and healthful environment.
  • Assist teachers with strategies for implementing students’ behavioral intervention plans.
  • Aid teachers with planning and organizing instructional activities, evaluating activities, developing classroom procedures, and preparing lesson materials.
  • Provide in-class support while promoting student independence and self-determination.
  • Assist with low- and high-tech assistive technology and augmentative communication devices to meet class-wide and individual student needs.
  • Compile, maintain, and file reports, records, and other required documents while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Participate in district staff development and continued professional growth.
  • Coordinate and facilitate student transitions between classes.
  • Assist students with special health care needs, including personal hygiene, restroom functions, diapering, mobility assistance, lifting, positioning, transferring, seizure control activities, feeding, and adaptive equipment.
  • Provide behavioral assistance using Crisis Prevention and Intervention skills.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • When assigned as a one-to-one instructional assistant, support a student with severe to profound learning disabilities.
  • Attend and successfully complete specialized training determined by the student’s Individualized Education Plan.
