Requirements
  • No formal education is specified, but education must be sufficient to meet the standards for the required license or certification.
  • The applicant must have excellent interpersonal skills, read with comprehension, write legibly, perform basic arithmetic computations, and understand resident care.
  • Tennessee CNA licensure is required upon hire. Out-of-state hires must have the Tennessee CNA license in process upon hire.
  • CPR certification is required.
Responsibilities
  • Follow established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and safety standards.
  • Take and record residents’ temperature, pulse, respiration rates, blood pressures, weights, heights, and intake-output measurements.
  • Encourage residents to turn, cough, take deep breaths, and use incentive spirometry as specified by the plan of care.
  • Ambulate residents, assist them in and out of bed and into wheelchairs, and transport them when necessary.
  • Attend to residents’ nutritional needs by distributing meal trays, feeding residents, and filling and distributing water pitchers.
  • Provide morning or evening care, including bed baths, oral hygiene, hair combing, back care, dressing, changing bed linen, cleaning bedside surfaces, straightening rooms, and other supportive care.
  • Empty drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins; record intake and output; and change disposable briefs.
  • Help maintain a safe environment by reporting faulty equipment, handling linen appropriately, and storing supplies.
  • Provide general care including positioning, lifting, turning, assisting with bedpans, urinals, or commodes, and applying or removing TED hose stockings and sequential compression devices.
  • Empty and clean ostomy bags according to procedure.
  • Collect urine, stool, and sputum specimens as ordered.
  • Perform range-of-motion tasks and assist with ambulatory devices as specified by residents’ plans of care.
  • Perform accuchecks after completing the required on-the-job training.
  • Answer resident call lights and respond promptly to resident requests.
  • Report significant changes in residents’ conditions to licensed practical nurses or registered nurses.
  • Maintain clean and orderly resident and work environments.
  • Document and maintain resident records as appropriate.
  • Gather equipment for oxygen setup and check oxygen connections and proper placement.
  • Check that equipment at the resident bedside is functioning properly.
  • Ambulate residents who are using oxygen.
  • Set up suction equipment and check that it functions properly.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competency in providing age-specific care to the served population.
  • Demonstrate the skills listed on the CNA checklist.
  • Participate in the nursing care plan to meet residents’ physical, emotional, socioeconomic, and spiritual needs.
  • Report faulty equipment, suspected resident abuse, mistreatment, neglect, and suspected criminal activities to appropriate managerial staff.
  • Complete required annual education assignments, work toward established goals and objectives, and participate in quality-improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of practice.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Dec. 6, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Each of Covenant Health's nine acute-care hospitals in East Tennessee has earned an 'A' hospital safety grade for Fall 2024 from The Leapfrog Group, marking the second consecutive semester all facilities achieved this top rating. The Leapfrog Group collects and reports data related to safety, quality, and other aspects of hospitals' performance. Twice a year, Leapfrog assigns safety grades based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.
