Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications:
Public Works Fleet Management division is looking to hire a Mechanic Technician II for the Fire Shop.
The incumbent will perform the following duties:
Preventative maintenance tasks such as oil changes, lubrication, battery checks and safety checks
State inspections as licensed/capable
Repairs such as minor tune-ups, replacing water pumps, radiators, brake air compressors, hydraulic lines and hoses, brake shoes, and servicing of aerial ladders and platforms
Assist in more complex repairs such as servicing heater and air conditioning systems, and differential and transmission repairs
Transports heavy equipment to repair facilities for specialized service or repair
May require the incumbent to perform work outside in any and all weather conditions
Must be capable of responding to occasional after-hours service call-outs
Must be safety conscious and unafraid of heights as the incumbent will work on tall equipment
Preferences:
- Fire truck apparatus maintenance and repair expereince
- Electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting expereince
- Maintenance and repair experience with heavy duty trucks (12 ton and larger)
- Diesel engine experience
- Valid Virginia State Inspector's License
- ASE Certifications
- EVT Certification
** The incumbent must obtain a Virginia or North Carolina Commercial Driver's License within the first year of employment (the probationary period)**
** The incumbent must obtain a 609 Refrigerant Recovery Certification within the first year of employment (the probationary period)**
This position is designated Alpha I and the individual may be required to work in emergency events and inclement weather
CDL Hiring Bonus - Newly hire employees with a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License will be eligible for a $2,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment (the probationary period).
$500 with first paycheck
$500 in the first pay period following a six-month interim evaluation (with "meets expectations" performance rating)
$1,000 at the conclusion of the probationary period (with "meets expectations"performance rating)

Minimum Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: Completion of eighth grade plus three (3) years of experience in mechanical repair work utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as Line Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic, Heavy Duty Mechanic, or Construction Mechanic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver’s license.
Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime when required to meet operational needs. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status. Successful completion of pre-employment physical. May require a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). May require a State Inspectors License. May require current Refrigerant Recycling Certificate. May require Brake Inspector Certification. May be required to complete Confined Space Entry training.
