Requirements
  • Completion of eighth grade plus three years of mechanical repair experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and training providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • A current and valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain a Virginia or North Carolina Commercial Driver's License within the first year of employment.
  • Ability to obtain a 609 Refrigerant Recovery Certification within the first year of employment.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency call-outs when required.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions and at heights on tall equipment.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.
  • Ability to wear and maintain required personal protective equipment in designated areas of risk.
  • Compliance with mandatory drug testing for this safety-sensitive position.
Responsibilities
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks including oil changes, lubrication, battery checks, and safety checks.
  • Complete state inspections when licensed and capable.
  • Perform minor tune-ups and repair water pumps, radiators, brake air compressors, hydraulic lines and hoses, and brake shoes.
  • Service aerial ladders and platforms.
  • Assist with complex repairs to heater and air-conditioning systems, differentials, and transmissions.
  • Transport heavy equipment to repair facilities for specialized service or repair.
  • Respond to occasional after-hours service call-outs.
  • Work during emergency events and inclement weather as an Alpha I employee.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience maintaining and repairing fire truck apparatus.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Maintenance and repair experience with heavy-duty trucks of 12 tons or larger.
  • Diesel engine experience.
  • A valid Virginia State Inspector's License.
  • Automotive Service Excellence certifications.
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician certification.
