Thunder Compute has raised $13 million in Series A funding to help GPU cloud providers maximise underutilised computing capacity. The company's software virtualises GPUs, allowing them to be pooled and allocated more efficiently rather than sitting idle between workloads. According to the CastAI 2026 State of Kubernetes Optimization Report, enterprise GPUs typically run at just 5% to 20% utilisation, representing nearly $200 billion in wasted capacity. Co-founder and CEO Carl Peterson described the company as building "the VMware for GPUs". Thunder's technology sits between developers and cloud providers, treating GPUs as network resources rather than dedicated hardware. The company has already served over 10,000 users through its own cloud service and is now expanding to work with enterprises and cloud providers operating large GPU fleets. Thunder Compute, a cloud-GPU platform for AI and machine learning workloads, has raised $4.5 million in seed funding led by Matrix Partners. Y Combinator, Avesta Fund, Preston-Werner Ventures, CyberAgent Capital, Transpose Platform and Amino Capital also participated. The startup offers access to GPU instances for AI training, fine-tuning and inference, positioning itself as a software-driven alternative to traditional hardware providers. Thunder Compute claims to offer the cheapest on-demand A100 and H100 GPUs on the market, with instances scalable up to eight GPUs, 144 vCPUs and 720GB of RAM.
