About the company

Shionogi expanded its U.S. portfolio by acquiring Victory Pharma’s marketed products, focusing on pain management and anti-infectives. Victory Pharma developed and marketed prescriptions such as Naprelan (a controlled-release naproxen) and anti-infectives like MOXATAG and KEFLEX for pain, rheumatology, and infectious diseases. Shionogi uses its existing U.S. sales force to market these FDA-approved products to doctors, quickly establishing a market presence. The strategy aims to grow in the United States by integrating Victory Pharma’s products into Shionogi’s sales and marketing reach, though Victory Pharma later faced a federal settlement related to promotional practices.

  • July 2026 U.S. XOCOVA launch creates a new prevention category in pharmacies and clinics.

What makes Shionogi unique

  • April 2026 RADICAVA acquisition added an established ALS franchise with roughly $700 million annual sales.
  • Fetroja and naldemedine give Shionogi specialized anti-infective and supportive-care depth across markets.

Shionogi launches XOCOVA in the U.S. for prevention of COVID-19 following exposure.

Shionogi launches XOCOVA in the U.S. for prevention of COVID-19 following exposure. Wednesday, July 29, 2026 Shionogi has announced the U.S. availability of XOCOVA(R)(ensitrelvir), the first and only oral antiviral approved to help prevent COVID-19 after exposure. The treatment is indicated for adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older who have been in contact with someone infected with COVID-19 and is now available through the company's U.S. subsidiary, Shionogi Inc. XOCOVA works by blocking viral replication during the period between exposure to the virus and the onset of symptoms. The treatment is taken once daily for five days, beginning with a loading dose of 375 mg on the first day, followed by 125 mg once daily on days two to five. It should be started as soon as possible and within 72 hours of exposure to an infected individual. The launch comes as health authorities continue to monitor seasonal increases in COVID-19 cases in the United States. The company highlighted that post-exposure prophylaxis is an established approach used for other infectious diseases and may help reduce the burden of COVID-19 by preventing infection after exposure. Shionogi is supporting the commercial rollout of XOCOVA through healthcare professional and public education programmes, alongside partnerships with national and regional pharmacy networks to improve product availability across the United States. The company is also offering a co-pay assistance programme for eligible commercially insured patients to help reduce out-of-pocket costs. For the U.S. market, all stages of XOCOVA manufacturing, including active pharmaceutical ingredient production, drug formulation, packaging, quality control, release testing, supply chain management and distribution, are carried out within the United States.

ALS Canada announces The Shionogi Canada Fellowship for 2025.

ALS Canada announces The Shionogi Canada Fellowship for 2025. July 21, 2026 The ALS Society of Canada (ALS Canada) is pleased to continue its collaboration with Shionogi Canada (previously Tanabe Pharma Canada) to advance excellence in ALS clinical care through The Shionogi Canada Fellowship (previously the Tanabe Pharma Canada Fellowship). This annual fellowship supports emerging clinicians and researchers who are committed to improving care for people living with ALS while strengthening their research expertise. This year, Dr. Pedro Saldanha de Castro will receive $100,000 over one year to support his work at Sunnybrook Research Institute under the supervision of Dr. Agessandro Abrahao. "Shionogi Canada's continued commitment enables ALS Canada to invest in the development of early career researchers across the ALS ecosystem," said Dr. David Taylor, Chief Scientific Officer at ALS Canada. "By applying Dr. Saldanha de Castro's novel integration of two well-studied approaches, this project may help clarify the biological drivers of disease variability in ALS, inform more precise clinical trial design, and support the development of personalized therapeutic strategies." The 2025 fellowship project titled, Innovative multimodal 7T MR imaging to assess cortical excitability and disease subtypes in ALS, aims to use advanced neuroimaging and other tests to compare two groups of people living with ALS: those whose neurons are overactive and those whose neurons are less active. By doing this, the team hopes to identify differences in brain chemistry, structure, and clinical severity between ALS subtypes. They will also validate a novel Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy method for measuring neurochemicals across large brain regions, which could help doctors better understand the disease and develop treatments tailored to each person's needs. ALS Canada is grateful to Shionogi Canada for its continued partnership and shared commitment to fostering the next generation of ALS clinical leaders. Support the cause You can make a difference. Donations provide crucial services and information to people living with ALS and allow ALS to invest in research and advocacy dedicated to improving quality of life.
