Leap (Leapfrog Power, Inc.) builds a software platform that connects distributed energy resources (DERs) to energy markets to form virtual power plants (VPPs). It aggregates resources such as battery storage, EV chargers, smart thermostats, and building management systems, enabling them to be dispatched to balance the grid, especially during peak demand. The product is API-first and software-only, requiring no specialized hardware, and offers automated bidding, dispatching, performance analysis, and settlement through a single interface for partners to access multiple U.S. energy programs and markets. Leap differentiates itself as a “Stripe for energy,” focusing on API-based integration with technology providers who can monetize flexible energy assets and participate in wholesale and programmatic grid services. Its goal is to decarbonize the electric grid by creating scalable, resilient, and efficient energy systems through VPPs and new revenue streams for partners.

Leap unlocks new revenue stream for California battery storage via ELRP expansion

Leap, a virtual power plant platform, has expanded its offering to monetise battery storage systems in California through the state's Emergency Load Reduction Program (ELRP). The new ELRP A.4 service, available to eligible customers in Pacific Gas and Electric Company's service area, compensates battery systems for exporting energy back to the grid during peak summer hours. Previously, battery exports were not widely eligible for compensation across California grid reliability programmes. The offering also simplifies participation by enabling providers to directly enrol eligible battery storage portfolios, with customers retaining opt-out rights. Leap manages over 400,000 energy sites and devices across US energy markets, working with more than 100 technology partners.
