Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Food Science, Agriculture, Food Engineering, Biology, Microbiology, or Chemistry, or equivalent experience in Food Safety and Quality Assurance, is required.
  • At least 5 years of food manufacturing Quality Assurance experience is required.
  • At least 2 years of general management experience is required, preferably in a manufacturing or agricultural environment.
  • Knowledge of food plant sanitation and laboratory techniques, including physical, microbiological, and chemical testing, is required.
  • The candidate must be able to perform college-level mathematical and statistical calculations.
  • The candidate must be able to summarize and interpret test data and make recommendations.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and applications is required.
  • A valid driver's license and use of a vehicle are required.
  • The candidate must be able to work a flexible schedule, including night and day shifts and periodic weekends, based on business needs.
Responsibilities
  • Direct the activities of the Kapua Food Safety and Quality Assurance Department and ensure effective execution of its responsibilities.
  • Ensure compliance with food safety and quality programs, including BRCGS, Good Manufacturing Practices, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points, internal customer requirements, and prerequisite programs.
  • Maintain the Food Safety and Quality Assurance Program and Manual, including reviewing and updating documents and production records.
  • Create, revise, and manage Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point plans, Standard Operating Procedures, Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures, and other policies.
  • Conduct manufacturing facility audits and serve as lead during regulatory and governmental food-safety inspections.
  • Prepare and present Food Safety and Quality Assurance metrics and improvement initiatives to site and company leadership.
  • Work with the warehouse team to control kernel inventory through the Quality Assurance Hold Program and resolve out-of-specification materials.
  • Establish and maintain macadamia quality standards and action levels by monitoring moisture, defects, and organoleptic characteristics throughout processing.
  • Ensure effective sampling, testing, and inspection programs are implemented and executed consistently.
  • Review quality-data trends and initiate actions to address variability or quality loss, translating food-safety and quality data into actionable insights.
  • Partner with operations, engineering, and orchard teams to investigate and resolve root causes of yield loss and quality defects.
  • Lead and coordinate Food Safety and Quality Assurance activities for new equipment and process implementation.
  • Collaborate with management to improve employee safety culture, with an annual goal of zero incidents.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Work as part of the Plant and Orchard Leadership Team to achieve company and site objectives.
  • Provide hands-on work, programs, and training to achieve Food Safety and Quality Assurance and site objectives.
  • Ensure prerequisite programs are implemented, monitored, documented, and verified, and lead plant regulatory compliance efforts.
  • Assist the product and process continuous-improvement team.
  • Foster a strong food-safety and quality culture across the facility through communication and engagement.
  • Assist in developing training programs related to quality, food safety, legality, food defense, and sanitation.
  • Oversee performance and development, hiring, leading, and motivating Food Safety and Quality Assurance staff.
  • Help resolve employee-relations issues and maintain positive employee communications in union and non-union environments.
  • Oversee responses to and feedback from third-party and regulatory audits.
  • Ensure timely resolution of product nonconformance.
  • Guide the root-cause-analysis process.
  • Travel to off-site warehouses, distribution centers, and suppliers as necessary.
