Universal Health Services slips 3% despite Q3 beat as $26M settlement charge weighs

Universal Health Services (NYSE: UHS) shares fell 3% in after-hours trading on Tuesday, as legal settlement costs and Medicaid payment uncertainty overshadowed a slight third-quarter earnings beat. The hospital operator posted adjusted earnings per share of $5.22, against analyst consensus of $5.20. Revenue rose 5.3% year on year to $4.73 billion, ahead of the $4.71 billion estimate. The quarter included a $26 million charge to raise reserves for a tentative settlement in the Cumberland Hospital litigation. That was offset by a net favourable $21 million pre-tax impact from Medicaid supplemental payment programmes. Operating cash flow for the first nine months rose 14.9% to $1.48 billion. The company bought back 1.35 million shares in the quarter for $242.1 million.

Universal Health Services (UHS) reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $308.7 million, or $5.22 per diluted share, down from $373.0 million, or $5.86 per share, a year earlier. Net revenues rose 5.3% to $4.733 billion. Adjusted EBITDA net of noncontrolling interests fell to $624.6 million from $670.6 million. Universal Health Services falls 6% as HCA flags flat 2027 earnings after $400M exchange hit

Universal Health Services (UHS) shares fell 6% today, hours before its third-quarter report, after rival HCA Healthcare said its 2027 earnings should be "generally consistent" with 2026. HCA beat estimates, with adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $7.22 against the $6.63 expected, and revenue up 3.6% to $19.85 billion. But more uninsured patients, mostly people who lost exchange coverage, cut about $400 million from its pre-tax income. HCA shares fell about 4%. Analysts still expect UHS to grow normalised EPS about 6% in 2027, to $23.89. That figure could drop if exchange losses hit UHS as they hit HCA. UHS reports after today's close, with a call at 8:00 ET on Wednesday.
