Stanley Black & Decker stock rose 50.3% on flat sales as margins widened

Stanley Black & Decker (SWK) shares returned 50.3% in the twelve months to October 29, 2026, far ahead of the S&P 500's 13.3%. Revenue for the four quarters ended July 4, 2026 was $15.2 billion, about flat on a year earlier. Profit still grew. Operating margin reached 9.2%, up from 6.7%, as management pursued cost cuts and moved US tool production from China to North America. Management flagged wider margins as early as October 2024, when adjusted gross margin rose 290 basis points. Tariffs, which management put at about $800 million annualised gross cost, then hit results before margins recovered. Gross margin was 33.0% in the quarter ended July 4, 2026, against 27.0% a year earlier. Net tariff refunds added about 250 basis points to the adjusted measure.

Stanley Black & Decker stock up 47.5% in a year, but returning tariff costs threaten margins

Stanley Black & Decker's shares have risen 47.5% over the past year, against 15.0% for the S&P 500. Yet the company warned on July 29, 2026 that a tariff refund that lifted its latest quarter is temporary. The refunds added about 250 basis points to second-quarter adjusted gross margin, which was 33.7%. Management expects new tariffs at the old level within months, and it excludes further refunds from its second-half guidance. The company still raised its adjusted earnings guidance to $5.20 to $5.80 per share. It expects productivity gains and a shift of US tool production from China to North America to lift second-half adjusted gross margin to 34% to 35%. The shares trade at 24.0 times earnings, against 22.6 for the S&P 500. The company reports third-quarter results on November 4, 2026.
