Responsibilities
  • Manage a team of nurses, medical assistants, and phlebotomy staff responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management.
  • Directly supervise nursing and non-provider clinical staff on a daily basis.
  • Oversee nursing and support staff workflows to ensure care is delivered efficiently, effectively, and in a timely manner.
  • Monitor staff education and training needs, and develop, deliver, and complete education, training programs, and competency validations.
  • Promote staff professional growth through coaching, mentoring, and support.
  • Apply best practice guidelines to clinic operations, patient care, and safety.
  • Create a work climate that encourages positive staff morale, motivation, and commitment.
  • Conduct performance reviews of clinical non-provider staff in collaboration with the Director of Clinical Practice, and provide behavioral performance feedback.
  • Participate directly in interviewing and hiring clinical non-provider staff.
  • Perform the work of direct reports when necessary.
  • Maintain open and effective communication among staff, other clinic providers, and Student Wellness leadership.
  • Coordinate compliance requirements with the Director of Clinical Practice, including CLIA/CAP certification and compliance with University of Chicago Medicine and University policies and procedures, as well as requirements of healthcare, professional, and governmental organizations.
  • Monitor laboratory and point-of-care testing quality and safety and maintain regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Quality and Quality Management Nurse Supervisor on quality improvement projects, including process and implementation.
  • Track operational data and prepare reports.
  • Identify operational risks and improvement opportunities through data translation.
  • Draft operational communications and protocol updates.
  • Manage incident reports as assigned.
  • Monitor emergency medical equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Monitor cycle times, including appointment access and message response.
  • Maintain documentation, workflows, and standard operating procedures.
  • Partner with IT/PnC teams to optimize templates and build updates.
  • Evaluate and coordinate vendor contracts, renewals, and service agreements.
  • Conduct cost-benefit analyses for new services, supplies, or equipment.
  • Liaise between departmental operations teams and serve on committees as assigned by the Director of Clinical Practice.
  • Serve on the Risk Management Committee to identify, assess, and mitigate potential clinical and operational risks.
  • Serve on the accreditation committee working group to write and review medical staff-related policies.
  • Manage protocols for screening patients, providing referrals to other disciplines, and delivering treatment to patients.
  • Manage personnel issues, including interviewing, hiring, setting salaries, and administering annual performance evaluations.
  • Develop the annual budget, monitor expense projections, and support decision-making for financial management and resource allocation.
  • Develop and implement operational policies.
  • Manage staff training.
  • Perform other related work as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in Nursing or a master's degree is preferred.
  • Five years of nursing experience is preferred.
  • Ambulatory or clinic experience is desirable.
  • Two years in a formal or informal leadership role is preferred.
  • A current Registered Nurse license in Illinois, or the ability to acquire one as a condition of employment, is preferred.
  • Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification is preferred.
  • Specialty certification is desirable.
  • Experience using standard office equipment and knowledge of the Microsoft suite are preferred.
  • The ability to condense complicated issues into simple summaries for a variety of constituents is preferred.
  • The ability to develop and manage interpersonal relationships is preferred.
  • The ability to exercise discretion regarding confidential matters is preferred.
  • Leadership skills, teamwork and collaboration, communication, and application of medical knowledge are preferred.
  • Professionalism, the ability to give directions, and the ability to handle sensitive matters with tact and discretion are preferred.
  • The ability to handle stressful situations with sound judgment, give performance evaluations, work with frequent interruptions, and work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds is preferred.
  • Active listening, decision-making, and problem-solving skills are preferred.
