- A high school diploma or GED is required.
- Zero to one year of related work experience is required.
- Basic familiarity with computers and the ability to navigate web-based applications at a basic level are required.
- The ability to read and write in English to understand basic safety instructions, take direction, communicate with patients, families, and medical center staff, and respond to basic questions is required.
- The ability to understand spoken English to follow safety instructions, take direction, communicate in basic English, and respond to routine questions is required.
- The ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures and use them in routine situations is required.
- The ability to interact respectfully with employees, professional staff, and external contacts to offer ideas, identify issues, obtain information, or deliver services is required.
- The ability to provide professional, service-oriented, respectful customer service using active listening and problem-solving, and to remain calm in stressful situations, is required.
- Must meet the influenza vaccination requirement as a condition of employment.
- The job requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently and standing for periods or moving throughout the hospital campus.
- Perform venipunctures, including blood culture collection, and fingersticks while ensuring proper patient identification and specimen labeling and using vein preservation techniques.
- Perform and report bleeding times according to standard operating procedures.
- Ensure supplies are adequately stocked and report supply needs to phlebotomy leaders.
- Transport specimens from the collection site to the testing site.
- Participate in laboratory quality assurance programs, competency activities, mandatory training, and continuing education.
- Maintain vein preservation and specimen labeling procedures.
- Transport routine and STAT specimens to appropriate laboratories.
- Perform training assignments and maintain and order supplies.
- Maintain working relationships with internal and external clients.
- ASCP registration is preferred.
- NCA certification is preferred.
