Requirements
  • Nurse Practitioners: Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing.
  • Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.
  • Physician Assistant Certification
  • Nurse Practitioner Licensure and Certification
  • Licensed in the State of North Carolina
  • BLS required
  • ACLS preferred
  • NP: Must have unrestricted RN licensure issued by or recognized by the North Carolina Board of Nursing with authorization to practice as a Nurse Practitioner
  • PA: Must have unrestricted medical license issued by the North Carolina Medical Board with authorization to practice as PA
  • DEA independent license with prescriptive authority
Responsibilities
  • Promote and maintain high standards of patient care throughout the continuum of cancer diagnosis.
  • Elicit detailed and accurate patient histories and perform through physical examinations.
  • Order appropriate diagnostic imaging and tests to determine medical and post treatment diagnoses, patient conditions, treatment toxicities.
  • Formulate appropriate treatment plans with critical thinking skills and high-level clinical judgement including prescribing appropriate medications.
  • Chart patient progress maintaining detailed and accurate health records
  • Participate in clinical research projects and understand the importance of documenting toxicities and data collection.
  • Communication among multi-disciplinary teams to support patient care.
  • Collaborating, supporting and building strong relationships with supervising, back-up supervising physicians, APP colleagues, and team members.
  • Participate in the education of patients, family members, new staff, students and other learners.
  • See scheduled and unscheduled patients.
  • Perform procedures including: Bone Marrow Biopsies; Lumbar Puncture with and without intrathecal chemotherapy; Ommaya Access with and without intrathecal chemotherapy; Punch skin biopsy with simple suture.
  • Attend program required meetings.
  • Maintain up to date clinical and professional knowledge via approved CME.
  • Protect patient confidentiality, maintain ethics and abide by North Carolina laws and Duke Health System policies.
  • Maintain institutional requirements for compliance.
