Requirements
  • High school graduation or equivalent and two years of experience in a behavioral health organization or consumer/peer-run organization, or equivalent education or experience.
  • Peer Counselor Certification from the Department of Behavioral Health and Recovery or Community Health Worker Certification from the Department of Health.
  • Within seven days of employment, apply for Agency Affiliated Counselor Registration/License with the Washington State Department of Health, and obtain the credential within 60 days of hire, depending on job requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct outreach, engagement, and direct care for unhoused individuals in varied environments, including cars, encampments, tent cities, streets, under bridges, and wooded areas.
  • Serve as a role model by demonstrating resilience in overcoming obstacles common to people experiencing homelessness and mental illness and/or substance use, and share personal lived experience as appropriate.
  • Use lived experience of recovery from homelessness, mental illness, and/or addiction, along with skills learned in formal training, to help clients identify goals that promote recovery and resilience.
  • Share personal recovery stories to help clients create individual recovery plans.
  • Participate as a member of a multidisciplinary team serving people experiencing homelessness, including those with substance use disorders, mental illnesses, and complex physical health conditions.
  • Assist patients in identifying and connecting with community-based services and supports.
  • Assist with tasks such as applying for and securing financial benefits, transportation needs, and other case management tasks.
  • Maintain clinic records and document client contacts in the electronic medical record.
